The next Dublin GTUG will take place on Tues July 26th. There will be two (somewhat distinct) components to this one. First up will be a talk from Martin Omander of Google CA on the Prediction and Storage APIs - this will go on for approximately an hour. Following that, there will be a somewhat different type of event - we're trying to experiment a little with formats and thought a panel discussion might be a little more engaging for the audience. This time out, we're doing a panel discussion on hackerspaces and the formal education system - it's quite general, but we think it's something that is of interest to quite a few folks - certainly something that's easy for people to have an opinion on.
As usual, if you plan on coming along, please let us know by filling out the form at:
Dublin GTUG Agenda - July 2011 Date: July 26th Place: Google, Barrow St., D4
Agenda 6.30 - Nibbles 6.45 - Google Prediction and Storage APIs, Martin Omander, Google Dev Advocate 7.35 - Break 7.40 - Panel discussion - 'Hackerspaces and the formal education system' - Hackerspaces are spaces in which groups of hackers congregate to work on tasks/projects that are of interest to them. Some very interesting and innovative work is taking place in hackerspaces worldwide. The link between hackerspaces and the formal education system is weak at best - this panel discussion will explore the salient points of hackerspaces, whether more people can be encouraged to engage with hackerspaces and whether they are intrinsically incompatible with formal structures or whether there could be a place for them within more classical educational systems Panellists - Mark Deegan (DIT), John Looney (Google), two hackerspacers, Mark Cunningham (DIT student), Martin Mitchell (in gainful employment) 8.30 - finish
Just to clarify, the calendar email sent to the list regarding the GTUG event this month and the follow up cancellation email was not sent by an organiser, I'm sure it was an accidental 'reply all' situation!
This month's GTUG is going ahead as scheduled, at 18:30 in Google's offices on July 26th.

In case any of you didn't pick up on it on twitter, we're delighted to have Bill Liao chairing the session next week on hackerspaces and formal education.
Bill has many strings to his bow; he spends much of his time at present operating as a venture capitalist. However, he also has a heart ;-) - he is passionate about how kids should learn computing skills and this has recently manifested in an initiative with James Whelton called CoderDojo, which I'm sure he'll tell us about next week.
Bill is a big shot and it's great to have him coming along to our little meet.
BR, Seán.

I'm interested in watching the panel discussion on the link between
hackerspaces and the formal education system but Dublin is a bit of a
drive for me (from Canada). Will you be streaming this online, by any

Can't answer, I'm afraid - but I do have a question about the venue: Which Google building is it, now that there are three (or four?) Is it the Tech Talk room in Grand Canal Plaza or somewhere else?
Best regards, -->Gar -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.11 (GNU/Linux) Comment: Using GnuPG with Fedora - http://enigmail.mozdev.org/
Unfortunately no streaming of the event Alex. It's something I'd like to look into but I don't know if it's possible in the conference room we usually use in Google.
Gar, we'll be in Gordon House on Barrow Street kicking off at 18:30 with pizza. We meet in the reception area and then head up to the meeting room - see you tomorrow.

I like the idea of using a phone. Is live streaming on Android using Qik the only option (I did a cursory search)? If we go this route I can see if we could get access to youTube Live.
Out of curiousity, does anyone know if Windows Phone 7 or an iPhone can stream live to any video service?

As I will be attending the meeting tonight I was wondering if I could stream the talk for the Unesco OER (Open Educational Ressources) Platform- http://www.wsis-community.org/
Also what hash-tag should we use for the live twitter debate? #dublinGTUG?
There are two issues regarding streaming: - we need to check with the people on the panel to see if they are comfortable with this - we need to check the a/v solution.
I will do the former and revert.
Regarding the latter - it is not trivial to do this using the Google a/v capabilities as that stuff is all on an internal network as I understand. It should be possible to record and post somewhere afterward. It may be possible to stream from a mobile, but the quality will probably not be so good.

To add to Sean's email: I've just set up internal recording via the video conferencing in Google. Unfortunately this does not support live streaming and the turn around time will be up to 48 hours until the video is made available (if speakers are ok with sharing this).
Cheers, Jean

I believe it was recorded using the VC (Video Conference) system and should be available in a few days - subject to people's generous time and skill in getting it from the Google system to the internet.
This evening saw a very interesting talk about the Google Storage API - including a method of using the same tool - gsutil - to copy data on and off the Amazon S3 cloud. Following that was the Google Prediction API and two live demos: the first determining the probable language of an input string (having taught the system what French, Spanish and English looked like first) and the second estimating the potential price of a house based on some parameters and a list of selling prices for houses in a region. Powerful stuff indeed!
The second half was an interesting discussion of whether the Hackerspace ethic can or even should be integrated with an established traditional education system. Contributors ranged from the Leaving Cert student who first installed Linux at age 6, to the lecturer working on his third PhD. I'm not convinced any conclusion was reached - but perhaps it's more about the journey and discussion.
All in all, a most interesting evening, topped off with insightful conversation in the Schoolhouse after the event. I'm looking forward to the next one, provisionally set for the 23rd August.

*cough* I think you mean the Google Storage Cloud... not Amazon's S3
Here's the info about Google's Prediction and File Storage API's if
anybody else is as interested as me ;)

No - I meant S3. We'd all expect a demo to include using your own service. What impressed me so much was that it demonstrated using the same tool, and similar syntax even, to port data on and off a competitor's similar offering.
