Just curious if anyone has any suggestions of conferences that they have found really useful or interesting. Right now the only ones on my radar are:

An Event Apart: Chicago -- August 27-29
WordCamp Chicago -- August 25-26

I went to an An Event Apart conference about 7 years ago. I understand that they have gotten more involved and even better since then and I do hear really good things about them from some friends. I have not heard anything about WordCamps, but at least one or two of the presentations in KC seem interesting.

Admittedly, anything that had an academic focus, or a discussion of how tools/practices are being used in an educational environment would make it even more awesome.

I went to An Event Apart in San Francisco back in December and it was
amazing. The speakers and presentations were all top notch. They
focused a lot on mobile because that's where the web is growing the
most. Lots of talk about graceful degradation and progressive
enhancement to make your build once, run anywhere mobile interfaces
offer the best possible experience. Highly recommended if you're doing
anything mobile.

Made me wish I wasn't a student so I could actually apply what I'd
learned there.

Thanks,

For usability, if you can go to a a "usability week" http://www.useit.com/ it's a tremendously high-impact conference. As a matter of fact, I'd suggest not even doing the whole week. The one I went to was two days of "writing for the web," then a general day (taught by Jacob Nielsen) and then two more days on another topic. By day three my brain was full. The conference is not cheap, but it's good.
