Central Dakota Cyclists – Informational Meeting
YMCA Community Room
August 5, 2010
MEETING SUMMARY:
Since a quorum of Board members was not present, the meeting was held
for informational purposes and the discussion of agenda items and
ideas.
1. CDC Mountain Bike Board Member Representative: Kyle Lefebvre was
approached about serving as the Mountain Bike Representative for the
Board and he has expressed interest. A formal nomination will be
presented on this at the next Central Dakota Cyclists meeting.
2. Website Domain Name: Five different URL’s were presented for
possible website domain names for the CDC. These will be presented for
discussion and input will be sought from members with final selection
to be made at the next meeting. The possible names are:
Centraldakotacyclists.com
Cdcnd.com
Bikend.com
Cyclend.com
Dakotacyclists.com
3. Bicycling Laws Review: Jason Doerr presented the State Bicycling
laws for North Dakota, Minnesota and Wyoming and a narrative overview
of the South Dakota law, and comparisons were made. The North Dakota,
South Dakota and Wyoming laws essentially mirrored each other. The
Minnesota laws were also quite similar but they did contain a law in
which motor vehicles must provide at least a 3 foot clearance upon
passing a bicyclist or pedestrian. Minnesota also has more definite
laws regarding cyclists responsibilities such as for signaling turns
and when riding amongst pedestrians. Discussion was held about the
possibility of incorporating the 3 foot law into North Dakota
legislation and the means to achieve this. Jason was going to
ascertain what laws were currently in effect in North Dakota regarding
passing pedestrians encountered on the roadway to see if it was
possible to amend any existing pedestrian laws to include bicyclists.
Mark Liebig was also going to see if additional facts were attainable
regarding the recent death near Minot of the cyclist on Highway 2.
Perhaps there is information regarding this case that could be used as
an impetus to spur legislative action in North Dakota.
4. Members present discussed the need for the CDC to market itself by
sponsoring or co-sponsoring cycling related events in the region. The
“Take a Kid Mountain Biking Day” event and the “Millennium Trail”
event were examples of two such events. Jamie Wetsch stated that
organizing the “Take a Kid Mountain Biking Day” event is held
typically on the first weekend in October and some sort of event could
be undertaken still this year and will look to see if something could
be established. The organizing of cycling events for 2011 will be
major topics at future meetings in an effort to promote the CDC. It
was recognized that approaching the city Park Boards and other
recreation/fitness minded organizations could serve as partners in any
events.
5. Upcoming bicycling events include the Lifenets Triathlon on August
22nd. Volunteers are still needed to serve as mountain bike course
marshals and perhaps in other areas. Interested individals can contact
Ralph or Pam Redline.
6. CDC Logo: Tyler Huber presented several ideas for a CDC logo. One
particular logo really stood out that contained the letters “CDC” in
the form of a bicycle. However it did have some similarities with the
Great Plains Cycling Club in Fargo. Before releasing the logo for
approval, Mark is going to contact the Fargo Club to see if they have
any concerns about the proposed logo.
7. Bismarck Bike Lanes: There was no update regarding this topic. The
MPO has yet to schedule a meeting regarding this topic with the
general public. When a date is announced it will be made available to
members so that a strong cycling presence is in attendance.
8. The next meeting was scheduled for Tuesday, September 21 at 6:00pm
in the YMCA Community Room.
