Subject: Zoom H4N card error - need advice

Need help solving a problem with a card error in my Zoom H4N. I'm using a
Transcend 16GB SDHC card that came with the H4N. I've successfully used this
card over the past couple of years without issue. There is plenty of space
on the card.

Today, when I connected the Zoom H4N to my Mac desktop system via USB, the
Mac asked if I wanted to format the card. I clicked "No'. After powering
down the H4N, I ejected the card from the device, re-inserted and powered up
again. The H4N screen said "No Card". I powered down and inserted the card
directly into my MBP's SD slot and again got a message asking if I wanted to
format the card. Later I used a card reader and connected via USB to two
different PCs which also prompted me with questions re: formatting the card.
(I've said "No" to all formatting prompts expecting that would wipe the
card.)

I have old recordings on the card and brand new recordings. The new audio
captured same as every other time I used the device and I'm pretty sure that
the file numbers were a continuation of previous file numbers as I recorded.

I did recently update the firmware on the H4N to version 1.72. I did not
reformat the card after the update (as there was no instruction to do so). I
have not ejected the card from the H4N before powering down or any of the
other "known" ways to lose data.

Any advice on salvaging the files on this card? Thanks in advance for any
help you can provide.

Subject: Re: [DPA Listserv] Zoom H4N card error - need advice

A happy update in DPA-land. I have recovered the files from the SDHC
card. Thanks for the suggestions. Here's what did the trick:

I downloaded a demo of PHOTORECOVERY software from LC Technology http://www.lc-tech.com/pc/photorecovery/
The program was able to see the card data even though the card was
listed as "Unformatted". I purchased the program for $40, re-scanned
and all files have been successfully recovered. Crisis averted.
