Does anyone know where to find smallish, cheap, wireless video transmitters that have
a pretty long range?  Or, does any one have any tips on building same?
A friend has a project where she'll be throwing video cameras off
of bridges, cliffs, etc. and wants to record the footage.  She's got cheap cameras (they'll be
destroyed as they'll be falling into water mostly) but would like to find/build transmitters that
she doesn't mind loosing.  Thanks!

I just read this:

and thought about this project. It seems like if you don't need
realtime transmission of the footage another approach would be to
build something that could withstand the fall and be easily
retrievable. Retrieval approaches could be low tech like a fishing
line that you could pull the camera back up with. On the
over-engineered end of the spectrum you could have some sort of
arduino blimp thing that would inflate post impact.

Just random thoughts.. hope this helps..

If you are wanting really long range, check out the space chair project! Simon faithful launched a weather balloon with a chair + camera attached to it in 2004 and streamed the video for the audience back on earth.

I don't know how much they spent, but after the switch to digital -- shouldn't there be a lot of analog TV transmitters in big dumpsters somewhere? :)
