I'm looking for advice from someone with experience in metal detectors. I am planning an experiment where I will need to relocate plant stems cut off slightly below ground level. I'm thinking of marking the locations with small pieces of metal. Ferrous metal, so if forgotten it will eventually rust away harmlessly.
I am not planning to get into the metal scouting business in general, so I am looking for advice on the simplest, cheapest metal detector that will work. I will have records of approximately where the metal markers are. I will just need to relocate them exactly. The markers would only be buried a few inches deep at most, and would be relocated within a few years at most.
Online I have seen prices from hundreds of dollars down to less than $10. I don't need the Cadillac but I also don't want to waste my money. I would be fine putting up with a certain amount of inconvenience such as working on hands and knees.

Make Magazine, Vol. 87, page 94 has a simple metal detector. Since you know pretty much what size item you're looking for, you should be able to tune the detector for that. Small piece of ferrous metal? Like a nail?
Caveat: I'm not a metal detector expert. Others may offer better/more informed ideas.
