to dork dork dork!
hello ...

i was really inspired by the sunday slideshow
of seattle dorkbot art shows. thanks shelly
for coming down!

and that reminded me that its time for me to start
soliciting proposals, art and ideas for my yearly
light-party, called LIGHTBAR, which will be happening
on weekends this February.

LIGHTBAR is a Seasonal Affective Disorder treatment
center, deployed every year (except last year) to cure
Portland of winter depression. It's an all-white space
filled with various kinds of bright light, and for
the duration of its existence it's a home and venue
for inspiring, energizing art and coordinated color.

in particular, any sort of light-sculpture or interactive
lighting system, or other light-based artwork that you
might have or be considering making would be a great
thing to display or install at LIGHTBAR. also, we'll
have video projectors and are looking for interesting
projector-art projects. or even if you have any cool
lamps or bulbs collecting dust, and are looking for an excuse
to light them up, this will be that good excuse. other
kinds of electric/kinetic art could be cool too, although
it's not a huge space so your 8-foot-wide whirling bladed
robot may need to stand outside. but if you have something
to show, or you think you will by then, please get in
touch!

Aside from light-art, LIGHTBAR will also offer a complete
menu of cultural events, beverages and light snacks for
the month of February. it might even be a good place for
Dorkbot events or meetings. At this point I'm still booking
the space so if you have an idea for an event to hold there,
do get in touch.

In summary: LIGHTBAR is coming, please be a part of it!

thanks,
-mykle-

Wow! That sounds awesome. I'm not sure if I'll have time to contribute
anything but I hope that you can get other people's entries :D

Is there a process for submitting work?

well, it's not real formal.  so far i'm sole curator, though i'm
trying to learn The Zen Of Delegation.  i guess it comes down
to a), do i think its cool and somehow inspiring ...  and b) do
i think you can pull it off, if it's something that doesn't exist
yet and that i'm going to be promising to people later.  if you
have pictures that's great, or if you want to meet up with me
and show me things, that's great, or if you want to just describe
it to me somehow, that's also great.

btw, i have recently had this ongoing conflict of band practice
on the same night as dorkbot meetings, which is why i'm almost
never there.   but i could be there to look at stuff, as needed.

I've been using the USB DMX Pro from enttec for a while to run midi-synced light sequences.  I think you can do it with the arduino for less money though.

Would my matild.A (Multitudinal Asynchronously Tactile Interactive
Luminous Display version A) be welcome? She's a home built multi-touch
unit.

I can set up an extra output for an external display and people can
"paint" on the walls or create a visual, interactive output to music
or some other such thing.

Mikle,

I was wondering if it would be possible to coordinate submissions of the dorkbot generated work or at least  have some  timelines/deadlines established.
Perhaps you could jury some of our stuff in at the next meeting?

Don.

yes! i'm sure we can work something out.  i don't stand too much on
formality but i'm psyched to have a meet-up about it.  the event
itself will be held in a temporary structure i'll be making in january,
and will be up all February.

if there were enough pieces that we could install for the whole
month, then it'd make sense to have some kind of opening early on.
however, i don't know what we have yet.

i'll be back in town on January 12th, so sometime shortly after
that would be a good time to meet and get strategic.  the deadline
would be the day of that opening -- perhaps the first weekend
in Feb.

my ongoing schedule conflict is that my band practices on the
same night as dorkbot meetings.  is it possible to meet up on
a different night for this particular topic?  really i'd rather have
it just be part of a normal dorkbot meeting, but i hate to make
everybody rescedule ...

hi!  i'm back, and i've rescheduled my band, so i will be there on
monday!  that's tomorrow!  if you have a nifty light-sculpture or light-related
project to show or talk about, i really want to see and hear it.

hey, did i ever reply with a hardy "amen" to this?
of course i have no idea what your doodad looks like but
it sounds beautiful.

if you're still up for it, i can provide at least a
projector, or better if/when Brad and I marshal the
resources to do our big video-stitching project.
