Mykle's illuminated nixie-like bike jersey (you remember the one, don't
you? hint:

)

...has made it up on the Make blog today apparently because Ladyada came
across it:

What would happen if you put on this jersey, got on Don's bike with the
steampunk *rduino controlled lamps, mounted the *rduino LED flashy
bucket in back (where did that guy go anyway?), got warmed up on the
clock-face dynamometer and then rode around town with a whereis enabled
iphone in your bag.

If *that* ain't dorky...

you would explode and die! but it would be awesome!

speed-vest seems to be experiencing a delayed flash-in-pan
reaction from our friend the Internets. just in time for
us to show it at some fancy thing in seattle next month!

but frankly i am already desperate to work out version 2.0,
with turn signals and brake lights, and wireless, and and and etc.

the one thing i've never really managed to work out, and i'd
love y'alls ideas, is how to do a version of this that would
be really legible in the daytime. at some point in the day,
reflective surfaces are way brighter than lights, but all
the reflective readerboards i've seen are huge, clunky, thick
things. mechanical by definition, it would seem. or maybe not?

semaphore... definitly little flags on your ever safe bike helmet. Could drive them with servos. Could even explain to the guy behind you that you are infact a legal user of the road and could they kindly give you enough space... might take a while and you would have to count on the fact that they likely were not in the navy 100 years ago...

How about a pair of scrolls (this kind of scroll:  http://www.artlex.com/ArtLex/p/images/parchment_blnk.scroll.lg.gif) with reflective tape on it.  Then you'd "just" scroll up and down to the number you'd need.  A couple of motors/servos on the ends could get it done.  Seems like you could make it pretty light and flexible.
