I haven't received anything yet, Monty. I'll send you the files I'm working on so you can look at the ground plane on the bottom. I've already sprinkled "DorkbotPDX" in a couple of places, but I think there's room for the logo on the bottom lower left side (viewed from the top side).

Sorry, Cameron, but this BusPirate thing involves about 30 DorkbotPDX members; we're trying to do it quickly, and no one has set up a mailing list. It's fine if you want to interleave another topic, but we kinda need to blabber over this one.
That said, are there any PIC experts that know if the ICSP header needs to be special? The one on the BusPirate4.1 design has the 5 pins offset from each other. Is that necessary or would a standard straight connector be preferred?
Needless to say, I need to know this sooner rather than later.
The pickit2 and pickit3 have a 6 (.1") pin female header and in general the 6th pin is not used. The programmer will need a bit of clearance if you mount them vertically on the other hand I usually just make a cable. There is a pretty good picture and a profile on the pickit1 doc attached.

This has been a rather epic thread. Let's see what it looks like over time.
I have a favorite visualization that I apply to conversations. Each participant is represented by a string. Each character of the string is one hour. Activity in that hour creates a blip. Inactivity leaves dots (or comma at midnight). Here is this thread from Wednesday through Saturday, up to, but not including this post.

Just in case your fonts don't look as good as mine, here is what this looks like on my screen:
Greg> Jim, I found an exact match for that EOL regulator. Here is Greg> the list of folks that have signed up for the kit.
If we are still talking about a target price around $15 (plus or minus), I'll bump my order from 1 to 3. I have some potential third parties that might like one.
The cost of the parts per kit (including connectors and 12-inch ribbon cable) comes very close to $15 with the volume discount at 30 kits. I should bump the quantities up some to allow for "losses in manufacturing", plus shipping from Mouser.
So $16 for the kit, assuming cash on delivery.
Add $2.00 for shipping (and you will have to pay via Paypal) if you are not going to pick up the kit at the build party(s) or at a DorkbotPDX meeting "soon" after it is available.
Add 2.9% + $0.30 if you pay via Paypal. Note that the parts order is going to be over $500, so prepay will be appreciated. I should be available to take prepayments at the next DorkbotPDX Monday meeting.
Doing the math:
$16.75 if you prepay via paypal and will get a kit at DorkbotPDX or attend the build party.
$18.80 Shipped and paid via Paypal.
*Don't forget to add a dollar or two for Ian* (Dangerous Prototypes) if you want to support his development of the Bus Pirate. Whatever cash I have left over at the end is going to him.
Also, everyone is going to owe @laen a beer for the PCBs. (or donate ~$3 to him)

FWIW, I've tried to do "exact pricing, 'see, I'm not even making a penny!'" on things before, and it's really not worth it. If you work out $18.80 shipped and paid via PayPal (boo!) then just charge $20. Hell, charge $20 for self-pick-up and $25 for shipped.
That way, you don't have to obsess over it when DigiKey calculates an extra pound and shipping is $1 more, and you don't have to dig into your own pocket to cover the dollar-here, dollar-there incidentals. If you come out ahead (you probably won't come out _much_ ahead, if any) you can send the excess to the donation you were asking everybody to make.

Ooo, this looks like a great opportunity to upgrade from my trusty black v2go..
definiately interested in 1 of them, might not be able to make it to the flow party (hope I can, but can't count on it, especially when I don't know when it will be) -- does that estimated shipping cost include a cost for assembly too?
now for a more blabber worthy question:
as one of the people that ended up with a v2go with a bootloader but no firmware, what do you all think would be an appropriate post manufacture test?
(persoanlly I'd be happy with just being able to see it through the terminal, as that's more than my v2go could do when I got it..)
1. Payment method 2. Prices 3. Description of what you get 4. What you don't get 5. Estimated timing
** Payment:*
Please pre-pay with Paypal if you can. My paypal address is nikkon...@yahoo.com.
Cash will be accepted at any DorkbotPDX meetings when I am there, for example on 2/27, and at the build party. I will not be at the Dorkbot meeting on 2/13.
Worst case, mail me a check. Email me direct for my address. * * Prices:*
** Best deal and you get to learn-by-doing SMD assembly : $16 Join us at the DorkbotPDS Bus Pirate Build Party to help build boards and leave with your board assembled and programmed. note that the party is not a structured class.
If you prepay and someone agrees to do the assembly for you and deliver the board to you, email me with the name of your representative so I can track who is authorized to get your board.
You can just pick up your kit at the build party and not assemble it, but what is the fun in that?
** Unable to make it to the build party: $18 Pick up your kit of parts at the DorkbotPDX meeting after the build party.
** Shipped to Out of Towners (and local folks too shy to attend DorkbotPDX): $22 Get your kit of parts mailed to you.
Email me your address if I don't already have it, or put your address in the comments with your paypal payment.
** What you get:* The kit includes all the parts, mostly SMD (including an unprogrammed 64-pin TQFP PIC24), to build a Bus Pirate v4c and a special edition, purple, made in the USA, DorkbotPDX Bus Pirate PCB v4cD donated by @laen. The board design has been modified to accept a more easily available 14-pin header, which is included in the kit. If you want a 12-pin header like the original v4c, you will have to supply your own.
You also get a 14-pin IDC socket and 12 inches of ribbon cable.
* What you don't get: The PIC24JF256 MCU does not come pre-programmed with the Bus Pirate loader or application code. You will need to have access to a PICKIT2 or PICKIT3 to program it. Attend the build party or find someone at a Dorkbot meeting that has one and willing to program your assembled board. Another option is to follow these instructions to build a temporary programmer out of an ATmega8 (or similar AVR): http://dangerousprototypes.com/2011/12/23/avr-based-pic24fj-programme...
You probably don't get to make a donation through me to Ian. He told Scott he can't be convinced to take any money from us. He says that the group interest is thanks enough. But if you come to the Dorkbot Bus Pirate Build Party, you just might get a chance to thank Ian in person! (Easter egg for reading down this far, but his attendance is not guaranteed)
I will say it again, the PIC24FJ256 does not come pre-programmed in the kit. Attend the build party or plan accordingly.
** Timing*
Pending Jim and Scott finding a venue and at least one of them having the weekend free, the DorkbotPDX Bus Pirate Build Party will be the second weekend in March.
Kits will be available at the DorkbotPDX meeting held every other Monday at Backspace following the build party. Hopefully that will be March 12th.
The Dorkbot meeting on March 26th is during Spring Break, so I can't guarantee I will be at Dorkbot that week.
If you don't think you can make the build party nor the DorkbotPDX meeting on the first DorkbotPDX meeting after the build party, you should consider paying for the shipped option to avoid a possible long wait for your board.
Kits will be shipped out sometime during the week after the build party.
Any kits not paid for by the DorkbotPDX meeting after the build party are subject to being sold to someone else.
My latest list of who is has ordered a Bus Pirate. If I missed your request or the quantity is wrong, please let me know.

I am unable to attend the build party :-(( , but would be willing to pay a few bucks to someone to do my single kit for me. I will prepay the parts. NP if nobody can do it, I will just do it myself later, but with my current schedule....
Private me to arrange, if anyone is willing to do this-

A little additional status. I will be sending out email confirmations tonight to everyone who I've got on my list to attend the build party. If there is anyone who still wants to sign up, there are a few slots left so please let me know ASAP (please email me offlist). Also, if you think you signed up and you don't get an email from me tonight, please get in touch with me either by email tomorrow or catch me at the Monday night meeting and I'll sort it out. Great big thanks to Greg and Scott and a bunch of others for equipment, organizing, and assisting with the bus pirate build party today.. I think it was a huge success in no small part to the volunteers that made it happen!

Scott, Monty, and Jim were great volunteers to work with. They did a lot of behind the scenes work preparing for the build party. They provided most of the equipment, a lot of supplies, plus their time and expertise to make the build party itself a success.
The members of Dorkbotpdx that came to the build party also played no small part in making the day successful and less stressful than it could have been. You guys were patient and respectful of each other and the volunteers, even when things got blocked up or went less than 100% smooth. I know a lot of you hadn't worked with SMT before, but everyone did great with very little instruction.
I have to add my voice here. From a participant perspective, I have to say this was an awesome experience. Despite some major user error, I too went home with a working board. Everyone went way above and beyond to help (including Ward with his extensive rework skill).
THANKS!
Bob
