Shin-Nichi LCM-5016-67HR 2x16 Character Lcd
At $3 apiece, I was hoping for(but not really expecting) a super
bargain. It has an HD44780 driver, but the Vlcd (pin #3) which affects
the contrast requires a **negative** voltage in the 3.2-4 volt range to
get a decent contrast. Unless your circuit uses op-amps or for some
other reason you have negative voltage already on the board, it's just
not worth the hassle of using two voltage regulators. It does have an
electroluminescent backlight, but the high voltage power supply is not
built into the board and must be supplied by the user. I hooked it up
to one of my power inverters I use for EL wire, and it light up a very
pretty blue. The negative power supply requirement combined with lack
of inverter for the EL backlight makes this one impractical. I'll
probably just take some pliers to it & remove the EL panel for my
junkbox.
Seiko L1642B1L 2x16 Character Lcd Display Module
At $6, and a recognizable brand, I was expecting to use this for my
surface-mount hotplate controller. Unfortunately, the contrast is so
poor that reading the display is difficult. I tried running Vlcd down
to 0 volts, but contrast was marginal. I didn't try running a negative
voltage because the "Absolute Maximum" minimum value(does that really
make any sense??) for that pin is -0.3v, according to the data sheet.
It didn't seem to me that it would make that much difference by pushing
it to the maximum (or is that minimum??) limit, plus, even if driving it
down to -0.3v made the contrast stupendous, I'm far too lazy to mess
with a second power supply (actually, it would be the third one for the
hotplate controller) just to drive an lcd display. It does have an LED
backlight that works. Doug ordered one of these also, we'll see if the
contrast on his is any better.
It was fun and educational, but I wouldn't recommend either of these lcd
displays. For my hotplate controller, I'll probably just run out to
Surplus Gizmos and pick up a Hitachi 16x2 display(some disassembly
required):

I've used one of these before and it's a nice little unit for only
$5.00.
