software for DIY aerial robots / UAVs

Are there any aerial robot enthusiasts / UAV builders who could point
me to some resources on the software that's used to fly them? I
recall some posts on either Make or hackaday that brought me (after 2
or 3 links) to a page on the open-source software that controls
them... but now I can't seem to retrace my steps.

A couple of weeks ago, I ran into somebody from the Charles
River Radio Controllers at their flying field on Rt 117
in Sudbury. He was building his own UAV and was writing
some of his own software. He was making some test flights
