I've added a pledge for the Emotiv Development Kit to the Wiki at  http://wiki.doesliverpool.com/PledgeEmotivDevelopmentKit

If you've never seen the kit before it's a user-friendly brain scanning EEG headset with software to let you create brain/mind controlled applications. The development kit is $500 so ~£350 and for what it can do it seems crazy to me not to get one.

Have a look at http://www.emotiv.com/store/sdk/bci/developer-edition-sdk/ for the run down of the product, and for an introduction there is a TED talk http://www.ted.com/talks/tan_le_a_headset_that_reads_your_brainwaves.html - Keep in mind the TED talk is from 2010 too so things have improved since then.

If we did get one we could have a hack day to give everyone a chance to put some ideas into practice and coupled with Arduinos I'm sure we could make some really cool stuff.

Can I suggest that, in the best maker tradition, you build an Open EEG
instead? :-)

http://openeeg.sourceforge.net/

It's been my intention to build one for some time now.

I'd certainly be interested in building one - I'll have a proper read of the site over the weekend :o)

I've also just came across the NeruoSky headset, which is only $99 http://www.neurosky.com/Products/MindWave.aspx - A much more affordable setup. (I'd love to know what the differences are)

A friend who works at IBM played around with one of the Emotiv kits, and
hooked it up to an Arduino (for a middle-ground of open/closed-ness ;-)
a while back.

It was used for part of Bang Goes the Theory, to control some cars. He
wrote it up at
<http://knolleary.net/2010/04/22/how-i-got-onto-prime-time-bbc-one/>

Cheers,

Adrian.

The guys over at Madlab have been playing with a lot of this stuff as well.

They also had it rigged up to an Arduino. Tbh having an Arduino strapped to your forehead is not the best look in the world.

Cool :-)

This looks like a nice bit of kit and they seem pretty open with their
technical info:

http://support.neurosky.com/kb/development-2/what-platforms-can-i-develop-mindset-applications-onfor

and have support for free OSes:

http://store.neurosky.com/products/developer-tools-2-1

Still, I think I'd rather build an EEG myself :-)

I've seen projects based on the star wars force trainer and they can be
picked up for £30 on ebay

And another link to add to the mix
<http://people.ece.cornell.edu/land/courses/ece4760/FinalProjects/s2012/cwm55/cwm55_mj294/index.html>
- includes a schematic that doesn't look too complicated to build.
