Hi, Just wanted to give the Knowledge Cafe a plug. Not really DoES oriented but several here have expressed an interest in what it's about. Basically its not networking but relationship building using topics that inspire and encourage people to talk seriously about an eclectic range of ideas, or concerns. This one is about the individual vs society, but as usual we have a business related side topic (the team/individual rewards dilemma) .
What might be of real interest to the group is our dedicated web space, which uses the groupsite collaboration platform, complete with a library of learning resources. Here's the info.
The individual and society.
Following the last 'open meeting' to discuss possible topics for future cafe events and directions of development it was suggested we continue with the 'entrepreneurial' plus 'economic development' theme. I wanted to broaden the topic and at the same time retain some practical value, hence the proposal to explore the relationship between the individual and society.
This is a very broad topic which has been addressed philosophers, anthropologists, political economists, including Karl Marx and Fred Engels, but also by management, organisational, and team development theorists, especially the significant managerial problem of whether to reward teams and/or individuals for collective performance.
Background reading material is available from our website, but you have to register to get it.
Reading includes:
Rewarding team and/or individuals.

Anthropological study of an individual.pdf
The final piece raises a question: How does a scouser become a scouser? Or: How: How does one who is not a scouser become one? This is extracted from an anthropology text and describes how Madrid (the city) shapes the life and personality of a single individual.
