Hello Everyone,

The primary reason for creation of this group was to meet other
developers from Toronto with whom to share the joys of using Django.

Given that, it is only natural to try to schedule a bar night so we
could meet and get this group going!
We can get some beers and discuss all the new and old in the world of
Django, Python, and software in general.

I am suggesting a bar in Yorkville ( since it is so central ) and the
date of Sept 11th, 2008.
This is of course not set in stone and I would be interested in your
suggestions!

Please RSVP using the form here: http://spreadsheets.google.com/viewform?key=pHCieVpYmMc1oEOdB6pZEaA

See you all soon!

Cool, I'm not in Toronto but not far (Waterloo) so I might be able to
come down, would be interesting if we actually got a decent hand of
people.

I would come if the location was more downtownish... or west-toronto
I don't like york very much.

Hey Drozzy,

You might be confusing Yorville with York University. Either that or
you don't think Yorkville is downtown:)
I meant Yorkville as in the neighborhood around Avenue and Bloor
( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yorkville,_Toronto )

You can suggest/champion another location and if you get enough people
to agree, we ll do it. That's why you can enter an alternate location
on the form above...
Democracy

I hope to see you there.

I would prefer downtown as well, but I'm not too picky beyond that.
Thursdays are not so hot for me, but I can probably work something
out. I definitely want to show up :)

Thanks

Thursdays are a bit off for me too, but I would like to come if its
fairly early in the evening.

Location doesn't matter much as long as its ttc-able.

Dress code matters. I can't get in if 'jeans and a t-shirt' isn't
acceptable. =)

I would prefer downtown, If I'm driving into the city, i might as well go all the way in, or even jump on the go. Possibly the Yonge and Eglinton area would be ok, there's an irish pub around there with an upstairs for privacy. That way we could basically run the place without having to rent it ;)

We're all officially nerds if we party because of a software release. But on the other hand we're all true Canadians if we can find any obscure reason to party. I'm torn.

I'm good with everything, let's just confirm a date and location by eod Friday so that we can prep our calendars accordingly.

I seriously hope I don't get sent to ottawa again next week =(
This city is lacking night life.

Hello guys,

I agree that we have to set a date and decide on the venue.
I didn't hear any active disagreements with regards to the date so
let's leave it at Sept 11th. The time would be around 7pm.

Now, we had a bit more discussions about the location. Here are the
numbers from those of you who RSVPd.

3 Spadina & Queen
2 Downtownish ( from the thread )
3 Yorkville
2 Yonge & Eglinton ( +1 from the thread )
2 Yonge & Sheppard

I am leaving the location unchanged. Yorkville provides a compromise
for both Yonge & Sheppard and Queen people. ( I am at Yonge-Eglinton)
As for the venue, Hemmingway's has very nice roof-top patio. I am
going to call and confirm the availability once we agree.

Their contacts:
142 Cumberland St
Toronto, Ontario
M5R 1A8
(416) 968-2828

Let me know!
Dimitri

P.S. I already started converting one of my projects to Django 1.0:)

For the first(?) django related question in this group...

Regarding the new model inheritance, let's say I have the classic polymorphism example:

class Animal(model.Model):
  name = models.CharField(max_length=512)
  ...
  def __unicode__(self):
    return 'Animal: %s' % name

and specific animal classes

class Dog(Animal):
 seeing_eye_dog = models.BooleanField(default=False)
 ...
  def __unicode__(self):
return '%s goes woof' % name

So the key part here is I override __unicode__
So if I make a Dog with the name Fred
>> print Animal.objects.get(name='Fred')
Animal: Fred
>> print Dog.objects.get(name='Fred')
Fred goes woof

So my question is...how would I get a queryset of animals, but have the overloaded methods instead of the base class methods.  If I go Animals.objects.all() - that just gives me all the base classes and I will always get that implementation of __unicode__.  I could do
>> print Animal.objects.get(name='Fred').dog
That gives me the correct class...but what if I have 200 animals how do I make that elegant?

Just a note,
CharField, stores in a VarChar in MySQL. The maximum length of a VarChar is 255. If you were to use this on MySql, your data will be truncated.  :D

I called the bar last night. Because of the Toronto Film Festival,
they don't allow the reservations after 4pm, but say that there will
be likely enough space for us if not on the patio then downstairs.

7pm this Thursday.

Ask one of the servers for the location of the party or just walk
around enough to find us.
To simplify, I will have a Django book on the table or call 647 206

Hey guys!

Thanks for coming out last Thursday!
I enjoyed meeting every one of you and I think the event was a blast,
and went much better than I expected.

The logical conclusion here is to do it again.

For the next meet up, I wanted to organize couple of the presentations
about the new features in Django 1.0.
You can come up with any topics you find interesting just let the
group know what you want to talk about.

Suggestions:
- extending newforms admin
- model inheritance
- new comment system
- GeoDjango contrib.gis

I am planning to book a room at UfT( sneaking in is a possibility ) so
we can get a projector going. Let's plan the meeting for Oct 14th
(random ).
The presentations shouldn't take more than an hour in total. Keep your
presentation under 15 minutes. Djangonauts are smart and can figure
things out so just give us an idea of what's possible and some best
practices.

We will head for drinks after, most likely to a bar in the Spadina/
College area.

What do you think?

Cheers,
Dimitri

Sounds like a great idea, and thanks to everyone that showed up at the last meetup.  It was great chatting with everyone.

I just came across http://rob.cogit8.org/blog/2008/Sep/19/introducing-django-debug-toolbar/ and it is quite handy, so feel free to try it out yourself.  Setting it up takes only a few minutes, and since it looks at the DEBUG flag to determine if it is on or not, you can easily just leave it setup and not worry about your public facing site displaying it.  (You really should turn DEBUG off on your production server anyways).

If anyone needs help setting it up or has any questions - feel free to ask here

Awesome! :-)

15 minutes might be a little bit short for a presentation though, I
would recommend 20 minutes presentation + 10 minutes questions. Also you
may want to make sure the video projector is available. During the last
TLUG the presenter had to use the blackboard because the video projector
was password protected :-/

I would be happy to make a presentation on model inheritance if you are
interested (and don't mind a strong French accent...), just give me the
date!

Cheers,

I definitely don't want Django to stand in the way of politics and
giving Darth Wader the majority government so we puny Canadians can
build our own Death Star and kill all of humanity that doesn't say
"eh" or "abut".

Let's move the meeting to Oct 21st.

Guys, I might not be able to attend on Oct 21st. :-(

Is there anybody else who is willing to do a presentation?

Otherwise would it be possible to move it to Nov 4th?

Dimitri, have you already booked a place? Do you need any help?

Cheers,

Dmitri, has anyone else weighed in on whether this date is good for them? Perhaps we could come to some kind of consensus? I'm personally ok with either the 21st or the 4th, but if it's the former I need to start making plans, as that's less than a week away now.

Thanks
Dieter

Yeah, 21st might not work for me either. Also, are we going to do the
presentations? If so, who is doing what?

Hey Djangonauts,

I think the only people who volunteered for the presentations were
Djoume and myself.
So we definitely need a few more speakers:) You can also present on
interesting external packages.

I am pretty busy right now with life and projects so the extension
wouldn't be too bad:)

****** Let's move the meet up to Nov 4th *********
Please update your calendars and pick a topic to present on.

Model inheritance - Djoume
Extending new forms admin - Dimitri.

Troy, I remember you talking about this at the meet up, if you want,
the topic is yours :)

I didn't pick a room yet, and I would appreciate help from anyone
internal to UfT.

Back to coding Djangonauts!

This also is a really busy time for me, I am not sure I could put together a presentation by then.

I will let you know shortly

I would be happy to present as well - I could talk about the new
admin, or I could do a wrap-up on all the new third party reusable
apps that are sprouting around (that's actually more interesting to
me, but let me know which one you are more interested in).

I believe finding a suitable space is more important than everything
else at this point. Not sure if sneaking in to U of T will work out,
any other ideas?

And yeah, pushing to the last week of October or maybe first week of
November might be better.

Nov 4 works better for me too. I might be able to give a presentation
about multi-lingual stuff. I'm preparing a presentation on this anyway.

As for location, may I recommend the Linux Caffe? They're just south
of Christie and Bloor, and they already host some other geeky meet-ups
(like the PyGTA meetup). I live around the corner, so it would work
out nicely for me. Here's their site: http://linuxcaffe.ca/

I don't see anything schedule in their calendar for the 4th. I'll book
us in there (for 10 to 14 people?) later today if nobody objects.

That sounds good - did they have a projector?

They do. I can't absolutely guarantee that we'll have permission to
use it. I'll ask the owner when I see him tonight. If we can use it
should I go ahead and make a reservation for us?

Sounds great!:)
Please go ahead and reserve the place.

Is there a reservation fee?

Thanks for being proactive:) Although, I will miss the adrenaline rush
of sneaking in.

All the presentations sound great!

I'm curious if anyone would be interested in covering a quick presentation on jquery-ajax/ajax into django?

I'm dying to know how you guys handle it.

Thanks

I'll second the request for a presentation of that nature... that's been on my list of things to get around to figuring out for a while now, but free time is sparse :)

I'd be interested in learning some more about js and django as well. I
found a four part article on this by Will Larson. I haven't even
finished the first section yet, but it seems interesting.

The article starts here: http://lethain.com/entry/2008/sep/21/intro-to-unintrusive-javascript-with-django/

I talked to David at Linux Caffe and we're all set to have our meetup
there on November 4th. I also confirmed that we can use the projector.

Just to be sure we'll have enough room, could everybody who plans to
attend raise their hand?

I'm planning to be there by around 7pm. You can find the location info
here: http://linuxcaffe.ca/contact

I just finished a bunch of work that used jQuery/ajax on a Django
project, but I suck at presenting though :)

I'd like to come to this meetup. I'm not from Toronto though so if you
have to many people coming I can opt out for someone else.

But for now, put me as coming

I suck at presenting too, but I know jQuery and its ajax calls inside
out so maybe we could run a semi-impromptu tutorial together.

Put me down as a possible maybe. I'm overwhelmed busy right now, but
maybe life, the universe, and everything will calm down by November 4.
I doubt it though, I start a new job on the third and may even be in
Montreal to meet with my new employer.
