Hey everyone,

G Adventures (formerly known as Gap Adventures) would be pleased to
host the coming February meetup at our offices located at King and
Spadina.

Does Thursday, February 9 work for everyone?

We will provide beer, pizza, and some initial talks. Happy to have
others provide their own talks or just insights :)

Cheers,
- Bartek

I created a PlanCast event.

Bartek, could you create a plancast event?

Guys, it is amazing that you are forthcoming with organizing the
events, but do drop me a line in advance because I was coordinating a
meetup already. Freshbooks is officially booking the month of April
and Wave or Trapeze is in May then.

Shouldn't the meetups be being coordinated on this email list?

Hey Ash,

Anyone can make a suggestion/offer and we will discuss. It was suggested before that second Wed of the month would be a good day and that was codified as part of the rules.

I am more than willing to listen to input, but listening too much input with respect to dates and times was counter-productive, at least 3 years ago, when the group was started.

Also, over the years, there was a lot less interest than there is right this moment. I reached out to a few companies including Gap, Freshbooks, Trapeze, Wave(James) to host the meetup, but didn't expect such an active response.

There are always opportunities for more meetups if there is an appetite. We can organize a hackathon in between the meetups. What do you guys say?

+1

I rather like the grassroots aspect of this group. Having people propose event dates on the list is working rather well.

Dimitri, I apologise if I messed with other (outside) coordination.

As others have mentioned, it seems right that the organization of the events happen within this group. My post is not a demand, rather a suggestion on a date and location .. for discussion :)

I'm more than happy to be part of in-between events like Hackathons and the like, more the merrier!

Not a problem Bartek. It is just that coordination duty always fell squarely at me so usually I was the only one coordinating.

As I mentioned, if there is a lot of demand, why don't we try a different approach?

I'm always falling off the beat with my evening schedules. Are we shifting from Wednesdays to Thursdays?

This one will be on a Thursday but by no means is it a rule.

I think the problem is that we'll never find a day that will work for everyone. Maybe we should alternate between meetups.

The one in January also falls on a Thursday. I'm probably one of the very few in this group with particular sensitivity to week days. I've finally managed to clean up a bit my Wednesdays for the next few months only to discover a new trend for Thursdays :)

If there is some flexibility for future meetings I'd prefer Wednesdays instead.

Thursdays suck for me. I can manage it once in a while, but certainly not monthly. Mondays work much better.

Maybe it's time to reassess weekday preferences. I've updated the old Google doc with 2012 tab:

Please cast your votes!

Thanks Sergiy,
I still think that we shouldn't hard code a day of the week. Based on the results of the votes, we could pick two or three days that work best with everyone and then rotate through those (would of course need to publicize those dates well in advance). If we want our community to keep growing we need to accommodate everyone's interests.
Any downsides to that approach?

Cheers,
Nathan Duthoit

The only downside I can see is that people can't make it a regular outing in their calendar. A set date allows to do long-term planning in your calendar.

We started with adhoc dates and switched to second Wed of the month by popular demand.

(I was for adhoc dates and it took a bit to adjust).

Based off the list so far it looks like Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursdays are relatively ok. I would suggest a rotating schedule of these three days. That way people can still plan far in advance and it'll let people who can't come out on a single day to come out at least every few times.

Hey Bartek,

When should people aim to show up at G Adventures? When do we want to start? I was guessing at something like 7pm, but thought I'd ask.

Also, I don't know if anyone else has anything to present, but I can give an update about the on-site deployment work we've done with SD Elements.

Hey everyone,

Yup, the Django meetup is this Thursday and is being held at the G
Adventures offices right by King / Spadina. The event is, of course,
open to everyone, and it will begin at 7pm!

Looks like we have a few talks lined up (couple on deployment, another
QuerySet tips/tricks, and a few more coming down the pipeline..) --
However, there's always plenty of time for talks so if you have
anything to present, even just a neat project, then just ping me
before, or on Thursday during the event :)

There will be beer and tacos (!) for consumption. Our office is
located at 19 Charlotte St. Look for the building with the "Charlotte
Room" at the base of it, and enter through the white door there. After
that, it'll be pretty easy.

If you have any questions prior to the event, or on getting there,
feel free to send me a kik message (bartekc) or just @bartekci on
twitter.

See you all there!
