I need to change the name of a placeholder but I'd like to retain the
placeholder content.
Do I need to do anything besides update the 'type' field of the
Content model?  Are these names cached anywhere?

Hi,

I think changing the type values to the new name should be enough.

There is a cache but it shouldn't affect you in this case.
