Migrations between 2.3 and 2.4

Just for the record, if you mistakenly migrate straight from 2.3.1 or earlier to 2.4, your database will end up in a royal mess. This was not exactly clear.
Is there any way of trapping this error? I'm in a maze of migrations, trying to ensure they all get applied correctly...

While I understand the temptation to rewrite history to keep things clean, we still need things to actually work after upgrading.

Yes we know the migration "reset" is drastic. This will need to be documented properly. There won't be a way to migrate to 2.4 other than from the latest 2.3.x release.
