Just for the record, if you mistakenly migrate straight from 2.3.1 or
earlier to 2.4, your database will end up in a royal mess. This was not
exactly clear.
Is there any way of trapping this error? I'm in a maze of migrations,
trying to ensure they all get applied correctly...

While I understand the temptation to rewrite history to keep things clean,
we still need things to actually work after upgrading.
