I don't know how this thing worked, but it looks small

you need an x-ray source. Doesn't seem DIY-friendly.

Well I would counter by saying Rosalind Franklin didn't have AliBaba,
equipment liquidators, and the internet!

Of course there's a good chance that it killed her before she could receive her Nobel Prize too, so maybe multiple lessons for the DIYer there.
