They drew a circle that shut me out
Heretic, rebel, a thing to flout.
But love and I had the wit to win,
We drew a circle that took THEM in.
I have been reflecting on this poem which appears at the end of the Holloway reading you shared with us, Gabby.
And after the STP visit to Acacia on Thursday, it felt even more relevant.....to what I have deeply embedded in my psyche from living in South Africa and the judgement and prejudice which made up the background of my formative years; to what these young prisoners experience when they attempt to make their way in a world that sees them as ‘criminals’ and nothing more..........to the shadow side in all of us that has the potential to not only become a ‘thing to flout’ ourselves, but at the same time judge others who are different and shut them out.
It needs both love and wit to change this dynamic...........a big picture sense of love accompanied by the desire to know more and experience more to gain the wit.
