Subject: Rudd, lead on climate
Dear friends around Australia,
Kevin Rudd says he wants to lead the world to a
global climate treaty. But on one of the most critical pieces of the treaty,
Rudd's government has been silent.
Poor vulnerable countries, from Bangladesh to Tahiti, desperately need
financial aid to deal with climate change. Without such funds, many
developing nations will be unwilling to sign on to a global treaty, and talks
will collapse.[1]
On Sunday, Kevin Rudd will meet with Obama and other world leaders at the
APEC summit. If he puts money on the table, Rudd could help break the
climate change deadlock ahead of the global negotiations next month in
Copenhagen. Let’s flood Rudd with messages urging him to announce
Australia’s climate finance figures by Sunday!

Experts reckon that by 2020, developing countries need over USD$150 billion
of additional, public climate funding a year to deal with floods, droughts,
hurricanes, and sea level rise -- and to develop clean-energy economies that
don't add to the climate change already caused by a century of rich-country
greenhouse gas emissions.
Last month, Europe put money on the table. But the two richest countries, Japan
and the US, haven't breathed a word. If Rudd makes a finance commitment
before seeing Obama and Hatoyama on Sunday, he'll turn up the heat on them to
pledge funds and jump-start the global climate talks.[2]
Insiders say Rudd is closely weighing when to announce Australia's climate
finance offer. But just last week, he publicly vilified climate
obstructionists who "believe their country should wait for others to act
first."[3] Send a message right now to tell the PM to put his
money where his mouth is:

In Australia and around the world, the fossil fuel lobby has been gearing up
all year to prevent progress towards a treaty at Copenhagen. But people-powered,
grassroots campaigning has won major victories this year -- from England,
where Gordon Brown committed to attend Copenhagen while on the phone with an
Avaaz member, to Brazil -- where Avaaz's 14,000 phone calls in one day helped
defeat anti-climate legislation.
We have under six weeks left. If our leaders will not lead, we can -- and
must.
With hope and determination,
Paul, Iain, Taren, Julius, Ben, and the rest of the Avaaz team
PS - Politicians and the media worldwide have spent the last week lowering
expectations for a strong global treaty -- saying it will take another year or
more. But with a recent study finding that 300,000 people already die every
year from climate change [4], low-lying islands already sinking
below the sea, and three years of drought at home in Australia, we are out
of time. A climate finance announcement from Australia this week could be a
game-changer going into APEC and then Copenhagen. Send a message to Kevin
Rudd today:
