Specifics with API?

I know a bit of javascript/php/xml, but I have never worked with an
API before and I have no clue where to start.

I'm currently looking to make my own javascript digg badge, using my
own images instead of the usual (to make it fit with my layout). Can
anyone give me the code to get the number of diggs for a certain
article, specified by URL? I'm confused as to which endpoint to use -
do I just use /stories and then specify link? Is there anyway to
specify a callback function?

Help would be greatly appreciated!

You may not need the API to do that. You can do a certain amount of
formatting with the "Digg This" button:
