As part of my efforts to get out in public more, I'm looking for opportunities to do some public speaking.  Do any of you other makers do that sort of thing?  Are there local tech/business groups who are dying for speakers who do more than just read their slides out loud?

Here's an example of a presentation (well, it generally ends up being more of a rant) I give about the process of designing User Interfaces:
http://www.progarts.com/UserExperience/UserExperienceAndInterfacePortfolio.htm
I've got another one that talks about the value of system architecture.

These aren't "technical" so much as they talk about the philosophy behind the effective design and use of digital technologies.  I'm about to do another one about the end of the Stupid World based on my blog post "Life in the Stupid World" that talks about the convergence of SCADA tech, the Web, and the Internet, and would love to get it out in public at some point.

I'd love to attend said tech/philosophy topics.

Would you consider speaking as part of an ongoing DHMN series?

"DHMN Tech Talk Tuesdays" or "Sunday Smart Series" hosted by the DHMN.
We could work in things like Arduino 101/Soldering 101/$LANG 101 or
anything local hacker/makers care to disuss. I've been long considering
how to share/expand my own aptitudes around tech and help grow DHMN at
the same time.

Or if a standing series is too much, we could certainly schedule
individual topics as we get them. We know we can schedule Harmony Cafe
with enough lead time. Then the DHMN marketing machinations can kick in
to pack the house!

The Marshfield .Net user group is hoping to have enough submissions to
run lightning talks this Wednesday night, but submissions are low so
there's a decent chance it will be cancelled by Friday afternoon to
avoid uneccesary prep. I can't find a good URL and if interested I
can forward the flyer.

+1 to Mike's note on DHMN Talks. I'd love to attend and also to
suggest the inclusion of lightning talks for show-and-tell and
presentation practice.
DHMN talks could be another way to invite people to the maker group
though scheduling the talks at a public forum like the library.

Have you considered speaking at NEWLUG?  They would probably be into this sort of thing.  Tim Bolz is the President, and also an active participant on the DHMN mailing list.

Couple ideas to consider, Lynne:
  1. If part of what you want is the public speaking practice, consider Toastmasters. There's a noon group,  http://213.toastmastersclubs.org/directions.html and an evening group,  http://foxspeak.toastmastersclubs.org/directions.html. Might be others.
  2. If you want to consider giving a talk at Avastone/Heartland Technologies, http://www.avastonetech.com/ and  http://www.hbs.net/, I can connect you one of the management people there who might be interested in scheduling a speaker.
  3. I don't know the people at Tushaus, http://www.tushaus.com/, as well as at Avastone, but I can connect you with someone there if you want to ask them if they'd be interested in a speaker. Might also be able to connect you at Plexus and SMT http://www.teamsmt.com/, through an indirect connections.
  4. If you want to talk to a class at FVTC, NWTC, UWGB, or ITT-Tech GB, I can check if they'd be interested.
  5. If you're interested in speaking in Green Bay, Milwaukee or Madison, I could suggest a few organizations or companies to consider contacting.
Let me know if you want connections or more info on any of the above.

BarCampMilwaukee... at Bucketworks in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. First weekend in October.

Show up, and talk about whatever you want, to whoever is interested. ;)

Not ignoring the responses, which are helpful and awesome. It's just
been a very tough week and I'm running around like a chicken missing its
robotic head. Will definitely follow up several of these once all the
fires are out.

Thanks everyone!
