Powerhouse Comics is looking for someone to create a sensor that will play a sound file of a wookie when people pass in front of it.  They'll supply the file, and i can provide components.  Who is interested in making the system?  The final product will be installed in the store behind the standup of chewie and we can put a poster up too encouraging people to join DHMN!

Reply and let's get started!

Would something like this be useful?

PIR + Arduino Uno + Wave Shield?

We should go down there and meet Zack.   But basically it just needs to detect a person and play the file.   If we wanted to get fancy we could randomize when it plays, or play different files at different times.  I say field trip....

Yeah that sounds like the ticket... And since it reads from an SD card it would be easy enough for the shop to swap out files seasonally as long as they had the same name?  But i digress with scope creep...

How well lit is the area? Could we achieve the same results using a photoresistor instead of a pir?

As well lit as any retail store.  Tell us more about the photoresistor ... Why this instead of a pir?

Well, I was looking at the singing fish, and they have a photoresistor at the bottom of a small hole. This way the fish triggers only when someone walks in front of it, as opposed to just walking near it.  Plus, photoresistors are cheaper than a pir sensor.

This sound like an important qualification in the requirements... Near or in front of.... Price however is not an issue.   Sounds like we have at least three people interested in meeting with Zack...  Should i arrange a meeting?

I think I met Zack at a China Buffet lunch.  Let us know if he will be at another meet up or if we need to show up at the comic store some day.

PIR might be better. If somebody tries to break into the store in the
middle of the night they could be greeted by a wookie even with
limited/no light..

But a PIR might set off the wookie when a customer on the other side of the store moves around.  That long range might be good for a whole house alarm system, but would probably get annoying unless the wookie was tucked in a corner somewhere (which isn't good for business).

Limiting a PIR may be an option:

Perhaps the sensor could be placed high, angled down, with a tube to limit detection area to just in front of the Wookie.

Project status update:    The wookie will soon be talking!

Alex, Jacob, Erin and Zack met at Powerhouse Comics on College Ave in Appleton.

Jacob already had a sensor wired to an arduino with a working app.

A box will be constructed to hold the parts, with the sensor recessed and a batter box to drive the device.  The box will be on the floor, and the speaker wire will run up behind the standup to a speaker behind the head.

Erin is ordering a wave-shield to send to Jacob's house.

Alex will find a speaker.  Assumption: get it to Jacob's house?.

Alex and Jacob will look around for an SD card, if none found we'll take donations from the list or order one.

Zack will orchestrate the wookie-sound recording w/ Bob Watson and Kirby.

Next meeting time: recommend the Saturday following arrival of Wave Shield, assuming Jacob gives us the go ahead.  Wave Shield expected delivery: .Mon Sept 24th (late estimate)

Awesome work guys!
Erin

Was talking on the phone w/ Jacob - sounds like he found one, but for your reference: wave-shield

Not clear on standard vs micro (to me), or max capacity, but the file sizes would be fairly (32 or 64 meg would be a lot)

Yep - I know what he meant Karl :)

 - the only spec requirements I have for the SD card are what we have on the wave shield page, so I'm giving what I know to help answer the question.

I think I have a 64mb one at home. If y'all would rather use that then buy one / use one that could actually be useful for something else. I will double check when I get back.

Who wants to draw a poster?  I whipped up a quick idea, if someone wants to refine it or draw something else entirely, that would be great.

I made it in paint, so the pointy bit of the speech bubble won't point anywhere else

Jacob just posted his Arduino sketch for this project to the DHMN github
group.

https://github.com/dhmn/Wookie/blob/master/wookiebox.ino

I think J said he was looking to mount a somewhat larger speaker and
then testing it out.

Great work everybody!

Fantastic!  Let's arrange to get together at Powerhouse Comics in Appleton on the 13th for installation!

Can someone make a DHMN flyer to put on the bulletin board?  Zack will reference that whenever someone asks about the wookiebox.    Logo, tagline, website, harmony meeting schedule should do it.
