I'm filling out my application for my job interview tomorrow, and I need 3 business references. I don't have anyone to put at the moment, and my interview is at 10am.
Can I use you? If so, please email me a telephone number so I can fill this section of the application out. You might eventually have to say something nice about me too.
Thanks!

Thanks to those that replied, I've got three references now.
My job interview is less than hour. I'm so nervous!
I'll let you all know how it goes.

You’re probably in your interview right now, but good luck.

I'm back, and now I'm suffering from interview shock.
My brain keeps thinking back, "Why'd I say that?", "That's a dumb answer..."
It went well enough, and we've agreed on a programming challenge.
I have to create a simple game in C# that controls an embedded Flash object.
I don't know much about either, but let's see if I can learn real fast.
They were disappointed that I didn't use "Ubuntu". Linux is all the same, isn't it?

thanks for the followup!

That's really encouraging that they thought enough of you to offer a programming exercise...

How was their reaction to your game demonstrations?

C# eh?  You will have very little problem translating Java to C#, it's pretty easy.  I believe that Visual Studio is still offered as a free download somewhere on Microsoft's website...  There will be lots of information on the web about linking C# to Flash...

Did they give you a Flash object to control or do you have to create that too?

haha.. All Linux the same?  that's funny.  "linux" the kernel is the some, but there have been many-a holy wars fought over "The One True Desktop"  Ubuntu is the current darling followed closely by Linux Mint / Fedora

apt-get vs yum  lol

Thanks for the followup!  Learning things fast is what you do!!

There are three big types of Linux, Debian based, Redhat based, and source based.  They tend to differ mostly in the way that software is packaged and installed.  There are small configuration differences, but Linux is Linux, for the most part.

Here's a youtube video about embedded flash objects in C#:

Whoa, Ross! Not sure which is more inflammatory -- Paul's statement that all Linux distros are the same (a la 'let the holy wars begin') or your statement that there are three types of Linux (i.e. 'you side distros who don't want to claim membership in these three categories can't play in our holy war'). Generally speaking, your characterization of the landscape would be accepted by reasonable people, but reasonable people don't fight in holy wars...

Paul -- you should consider going to a NEWLUG meeting, http://newlug.org/ to start an IRL discussion.

FYI, several NEWLUG ninjas (President, Archivist, and DHMN Liaison) are subscribed to the DHMN discussion list.
Tim Bolz is the NEWLUG President
Ross Larson is the NEWLUG Archivist
Mike Putnam is the DHMN Liaison

That being said, we do have our own mailing list, as well: http://newlug.org/mailman/listinfo/newlug

Discussion is welcome!

yeah... now that you mention it... I was kinda wondering that myself... are they a Mono shop??  Yikes... interacting with COM objects via Mono instead of visual studio...  That could be some hardship.  Part of "The Microsoft Way" is maximizing the use of their tools...

or perhaps they run windows in a VM with virtualbox on Ubuntu.

Inquiring minds want to know!?!

Congrats on the programming challenge!

From what I've seen, you will do well with it.

As far as the Ubuntu thing (can you tell I'm not necessarily a fan?), it is something that you should pick up fairly easily if it's their distro of choice. One reason they may be asking about it is that it seems that Ubuntu is becoming the Linux platform of choice for game developers. I'm not sure why that is, but I'm hearing rumblings around larger studios starting to branch out into Linux development, but focusing mainly on Ubuntu.

I'm not trying to start a "Linux War", I just figure Linux is all the same in that I need to type cryptically named commands with numerous undecipherable and understandable arguments and flags. If I can do that on one Linux box, I can surely do that on all of them.

I don't understand the programming C# and also proficient with Linux thing either, and I didn't ask.

Thanks again for everyone's support and help with my interview. It's a big step for me!
