A co-worker of mine is in the process of closing a bowling alley, and I wanted to mention that some items are available, if anyone is interested.

Bowling lanes are for sale by the linear foot - 10 bucks per linear foot - about 42 inches wide and 2 inches thick.  It would make awesome tables if anyone has the woodworking experience to make this happen.

There is other stuff, as well.  It mentions interior siding and glass blocks, and I'm in the process of inquiring about other items.  I've attached a picture of the flyer that was posted.

As a warning, the items are located in Shawano, so drop me a message if you need more info on anything.

I have some large furniture clamps, a router, table-saw and plenty of experience,
I'm free this week so I could make some tables if needed.

also, what type of wood is it?

Typically hard maple. Very good stuff if one can get it. Especially that thick!

YES!! This could be fantastically awesome for making desks for the coworking space. If anybody could help us out with that this could be a really awesome furniture solution for us!

Do you know how many feet are available? Am I reading it correctly that it would be $10 per 42"x12" of area?

Googling on used bowling alley lane that it seems a good fair price.
Saw some notes on asking for composition, as newer lanes have more plastics and ask about embedded metal so you know what to expect when sawing and sanding.

I can help with construction and can donate some funds to the cause once we know how much we want and if this is a viable solution for tables.

I might have access to a table saw, if my dad's is currently set up. :)

I feel like a continual wet blanket on people starting on projects designed to outfit or upgrade the new makerspace. The real problem is that the makerspace is so small that we just can't do everything that everyone is suggesting. Paul, at some point the 'lead' person for the space (you or someone else) will need to work with the officers and whoever else is deemed appropriate to collect, manage and prioritize the great project ideas everyone has been bring up. One key to that will be deciding on what the layout of the space will look like, i.e. how many tables and chairs we want for people to be able to sit at, how many storage bins for members, etc. I've got a tentative layout for people to look at as a potential starting point, and I'll try to get that to the make session tonight for a discuss tool in case it would be helpful.

Hope this comment is viewed as useful and not just annoying everyone who's suggesting cool ways to outfit our new makerspace...

No, that makes perfect sense. Maybe after tonight the officers will have a better idea of what may be needed and what types of materials would be beneficial for making those necessities. I am more than happy to donate time and labor to making things that are needed once the needs have been determined.

I envision heavy use of the TV and Trello tonight as collaborative back-logging sparks fly!

OK, I was able to get in touch with the owner (Greg) about the bowling lanes and remaining stuff.

The bowling lanes are comprised as follows.
* The followup area (before the foul line) - made of maple, 1.5 inches thick, in pretty good shape. $15 per linear foot.
* The area right after the foul line - maple - 2 inches thick, about 16 feet long, and slightly battered from bowling balls landing on it - $10 per linear foot
* The area before the pins - this is PINE, 2 inches thick, and in much better shape - $10 per linear foot
* The pin area - 2 feet of maple that is really rough from years of pins flying all over the place - $10 per linear foot

There is some other stuff, as well (tables, chairs, backless bar stools, bowling balls, bags, ball bags, lockers, file cabinets, a fog machine, disco ball and lights, stainless steel sinks, ceiling tiles and grid, Christmas decorations, a safe, a bar top, and various basement junk).  I have some information about this stuff, but you can also call Greg if you have really specific questions.  He's getting a ton of calls, so make sure you are pretty serious about buying if you want to call.

Greg said he's willing to let people tour around the place, it's 604 S. Main Street Shawano, WI.  Best times to tour are weekdays after 5PM or Sunday afternoons.  Make sure to call Greg first (715-853-3155) if you plan on stopping by the place.

Payment can be in the form of cash or check.

The place is closing 4/25, so time is of the essence.

Greg is a good guy, and he's in the process of closing his business, so I hope we can be helpful and respectful in getting some of this stuff off of his hands.

Thanks!

Ross

Wow, thank you so much for putting this list together! I'm still working on looking into some of this stuff for the Avenue HQ.

As a friendly reminder, my co-worker is closing his bowling alley on 4/25 (Thursday), so if you were planning to purchase any of the items that I mentioned previously or take a look at the various other items that are left over, you don't have much time left.
