Good news everybody!

We now are renting a basement space in the Morrison Building located at 120 N. Morrison Street, Appleton.

Our lease doesn't start until May 1, so we've got some time to plan for things.
The total space is 662sq feet, plus 100ft of secured storage.
We'll have access to men and women's bathrooms, a kitchen, an elevator?(did it go to the basement? I can't remember).
We'll have our own 24/7 access door.
It's a nice solid concrete building.
It's located downtown, but the parking is terrible. You can pay for a parking ramp right next door, use quarters in metered parking space all over the place, or park free and walk a few blocks.

I can hardly think of all the things we'll need, but off the top of my head we'll need tables and chairs to start out with.

It's all very exciting!

What do you think?

If we're looking for a place to keep track of the facility planning activities, may I suggest the DHMN facility planning board?

Adafruit's "Part 4" of the Hackerspace HOWTO seems to speak to our current situation.

Before we start moving stuff in to the space, let's talk about the floorplan.  Do we have any mockups of the dimensions of the space, along with door and power outlet placement?  If not, it seems like a good place to start.

I totally agree with Paul that the first thing we need are tables and chairs. Paul, do you want to propose a meeting date and time (at the DHMN Morrison Makerspace, of course!) for interested people to come up with ideas and a plan to get at least six tables and 20+ chairs?

DHMN Morrison Makerspace, just to explain logic of name.

DHMN needs to be in name because it's Our makerspace, not just some random fox valley makerspace.

Morrison - that describes its location, gives it a tie to Willems Marketing and to the coworking space Matthew Straub is developing on the first floor, and doesn't build in a mental regional limitation like Appleton only or Fox Valley only.

Makerspace - because, unfortunately, Hackerspace has negative connotations for many people in the region and makerspace will likely draw a larger and more diverse membership.

Plus, Mark Nickel said he liked the name!

I rather prefer "DHMN Makerspace" or "DHMN Makeshop" or "DHMN
Createspace" etc.

Will the makerspace have its own website?  I'm OK with dhmn.net/makerspace, but I wanted to verify.  I'm not sure if domain name grabbing should matter or not.

I'm calling it DHMN-Appleton for now, so I don't confuse it with DHMN-Menasha,  DHMN-Moon, or DHMN-4thDimension.
The floorplan was passed around by email, but I can't find it at the moment.
There is an electrician coming to install more circuits and outlets, and we'll have DHMN managed business class internet.

We could name it together democratically. We'll nominate names, and then rank them into preferred order with our votes.

DHMN Appleton
DHMN Morrison Makerspace

My humble opinion would be that a subdomain would do the trick.

RE: the name. The one thing that's always sort of bothered me is that
"DHMN" doesn't really roll of the tongue, unlike say NEWLUG and FVNUG.
Those examples both have a pronouncible part that helps it stick in your
mind. In terms off a "branding" I almost prefer DMM (DHMN Morrison
Makerspace) for the simple fact it rolls of the tongue easier.

Trello has integrated voting functionality.  I suggest voting there unless someone has another workable option.

I like DHMN meatspace.
Some members pronounce DHMN as "demon".
To stay true to the Danierl Suarez books, our space would be a Holon.

Not everyone is familiar with Daniel Suarez, even if his books are pretty awesome.  While I think the concept of a Holon is awesome, I think that calling the space a DHMN Holon would severely affect our elevator speech when describing the space, especially because it sounds like "Demon Hole". Just having the word "hacker" in our name seems to give some people the heebie jeebies.

For those not familiar with "meatspace", this is a play on words.  Meatspace is a term for the real world, contrasting with Cyberspace.

It's also a homophone of meetspace -  a space where people meet.  I'm OK with either spelling.

I think we should come up with a big title for the makerspace then just call it by the initials. Like APPLETON CREATOR STATION = ACS

If we're trying to increase our paying membership from the available population in the Fox Valley and northeast Wisconsin so we can actually pay the monthly cost of the makerspace, I don't think either Meatspace or Meetspace will be a useful name. If we had lots of members we could come up with some really cool names that appeals to the geek/maker members already in the group. At this point, it seems like DHMN would be able to best increase its membership by using a name for the Willems Marketing basement that doesn't confuse or alienate anyone.

When we open the second DHMN facility in the Fox Valley (the one with heavy duty and loud tools and lots more space than Morrison St) we can use a cool and interesting name for that facility...

Not everyone is using Trello, so I vote against using Trello to vote on a name.

How about discussion and voting at the next monthly organizational meeting with other people able to vote via the mailing list?

Bob,

While not everyone is using Trello, there are currently 23 members on the DHMN Facility Planning board (24, if you include the invite I sent you).

The mailing list probably has further reach than the Trello board, but the topic threads can get long-ish.  I'm fine with whatever the group decides.

I don't understand how these topics always get split into multiple threads. Anyway, my two cents.

Although it's not yet common to the public, makerspace is the word that's used in the media; it's the word most likely to jiggle people's memories of having heard it somewhere before. I think we should claim that word and lay claim to being the Fox Valley or Appleton Makerspace. If we don't someone else will. I think Morrison is just our, soon to be, current address. So I suggest either,

DHMN Appleton Makerspace
or
DHMN Fox Valley Makerspace

Bob has a point about someone claiming to be "THE" makerspace for an area, such as Appleton or the Fox Valley.

I'm still opposed to including a region or city in the name because I think it limits the appeal to people outside that region, but if the vote came down to Appleton vs Fox Valley because people didn't want Morrison Makerspace, I'd say DHMN Fox Valley Makerspace would exclude less people, have wider appeal and therefore be a better choice than Appleton.

Paul K should propose a time to meet.

I'm ok with this weekend, but it probably wouldn't hurt to let the naming issue percolate for a couple weeks.

DHMN Appleton Makerspace - that's perfect.  "Honey, I'm going to the DAM space to work on my DAM project..."  :)

Too many abbreviations!  We need something simple that rolls off the tongue.  I second Jason's request to discuss at the next in-person meeting, then we can bat around all kinds of names...

That's a valid point. Unlike Milwaukee or Madison, Fox Valley and
Appleton are much more limiting terms and people that are even 10 or 15
minutes away wouldn't identify with either.

I have only recently joined the group and most of you don't know me, but I pledged monthly support for the space so I'd like to chime in anyway.

I prefer the name "Appleton Makerspace" exactly because it lays claim to a geographical area.  Oshkosh and others in the Fox Valley might make their own as the culture grows.  And it's not like we are trying to get an exclusive on the ability to have a Makerspace.  But if others in Appleton want to join in a space, this would be the established one to check out.

If anyone is thinking of joining a space, I doubt many will feel alienated by the name not saying Neenah or encompassing the wider area of Fox Valley.  It's says where it is, clearly in the center of Appleton.  Would there be anyone who wonders if you have to be a resident of that city to join?  Maybe.  Probably very few.

Also, by saying Appleton, just the name makes clear how far someone would have to travel to use the space.  And in the case of using a space, geography matters.

We could try something less generic and more clever, but if what we want is to be found, "Makerspace" is what people will be looking for.  And "Appleton" is where we will draw most from.

Like maybe, "Honey, I'm going to the makerspace to work on my project …" The short version doesn't have to be the initials. ;)

Very succinct.

Agreed. I'm not alienated by "Milwaukee Makerspace", but I do know
approximately how far away it is. I doubt people living in West
Allis for example are in a huff about the "Milwaukee" label.

I'm kinda DHMN meeting'd out this week. I plan on spending the weekend with my family.
Unless there's a burning agenda that absolutely demands attention, I think talking about all this in our mailing list and at next Thursday's make meeting is fine for now.
Feel free to meet to discuss plans without me. It's going to take a lot of everyone's hard work to make this a success.

Hey all! First I just want to say that I'm extremely excited that you folks and Willems came to an agreement so quickly! Thanks Bob and Paul both for your enthusiasm and work on that! Mike Van Thull texted me this morning and said you guys signed the lease and it really made my day.

I don't have a preference what you name your area, but because nobody's mentioned it, I just wanted to let you all know that the overall space is going to go by the name of The AvenueHQ. The main reason is because there are a lot of different things running through there (you folks, high school programs, coworking, and at least one nonprofit; almost certainly more), and the name implies downtown and collaboration. Although the address is not directly on College Ave, we hope it will outgrow its current place and relocate downtown in the next few years.

Lastly, shameless plug: If you know anyone interested in the coworking aspect specifically, refer them to www.theavenuehq.com. If they fill out the interest form I will get in touch with them. We're trying to get as much potential member input as possible in the buildout of the space.

Looking forward to seeing everyone more!

I like Appleton Makerspace or a name similar to that as well. Also, Paul's idea of the DHMN meatspace.

When I think of DHMN, the first thing that I think of is the Distributed part of the name. If you think about it that way, we could possibly have DHMN-associated spaces scattered across Northeast Wisconsin. The population is spread out enough up here that we could have one "main" makerspace as headquarters or something and then smaller spaces in other communities as people move or we reach a broader audience.

That's my 2 cents if it akes any sense.

tl;dr

I love your line of thinking, Kristin! The 'Distributed' part of the DHMN name was originally used to mean two things. The first is exactly what you said, distributed geographically. The DHMN is meant to be an organization that has groups, members, resources and facilities all over northeast Wisconsin, all over Wisconsin, and as a matter of fact, all over the world. My vision is that as we grow we'll have international members who may come to the US or may just interact virtually, and there will be DHMN spaces in countries around the world that Fox Valley DHMN members can visit when they're traveling.

So we absolutely hope to have DHMN facilities across northeast Wisconsin (and elsewhere).

We also hope to make the DHMN so successful, strong, fun and well-known that we have several facilities in Appleton. As I mentioned in my blog post about the new space, there are many maker activities which can't be done in the Morrison Street basement. One of my goals is to grow the group to the size where we can support at least two facilities in downtown Appleton, with a second facility that is within easy walking distance of Morrison Street and is able to support table saws, large projects, and lots of noisy, dirty activities. When we grow the group to 100+ Regular/Full paying members, we can probably even support a third facility if we find a place that has specialized resources or features that a bunch of members need but aren't available at the first two Appleton facilities.

This long term vision of multiple Appleton DHMN facilities is why I suggested using the DHMN Morrison Makerspace name. We could do the Appleton high school directional thing of having DHMN Appleton Makerspace North and DHMN Appleton Makerspace South (and east and west, I guess), but it just seemed like DMM or DM2 would be a good nomenclature when we have three or more Appleton spaces.

The other part of distributed is the idea of a participant-driven group, with motivation, involvement, responsibility and leadership distributed throughout all the members. In the same way that barcamps and other unconferences have no attendees, only participants, the DHMN should not have a handful of members responsible for making things happen and for the group being an enjoyable, strong, effective, fun group. Our goal should be to encourage each member to be responsible for at least some part of what the group is doing. To the extent possible, we want to have the group deviate from the 1/9/90 rule -- we want to be different from most groups! There needs to be officers of the DHMN, such as Paul K being president right now, but those officers will ideally change each year and everyone will be responsible for making the group run well in different ways at different times.

That's why the "Law of Two Feet" (http://www.communityweaving.org/openspace.pdf  and  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open-space_technology) applies to the DHMN just like it does to barcamps and unconferences. If something related to the DHMN needs to be done, a member should never say, "Somebody should do X" -- they should instead say, "I'd like to see X happen. Does anyone know if that's already being planned, or is it ok if I start working on it."

Lot more bouncing around upstairs, but that's enough to burden you with for now...
