Seems like there might be enough interest in DHMN to develop a project involving an Arduino CAN-BUS OBD Gas Gauge (or something else focused on playing with and learning about vehicle OBD systems).

I have a bluetooth OBDII adapter for my car that connects to my phone
and have an app that gives me all sorts of information.

Just recently I found the right PID for getting the fuel level for my
car. I still have to do more testing to see how close the miles to
empty is.

I got one of these to connect to my car.

There are now cheaper ones, I don't know what the difference (if any
besides size) is you might want to look at
http://www.dealextreme.com/p/elm327-obd2-obdii-bluetooth-auto-car-diagnostic-scan-tool-dc-12v-117536

You also have other bluetooth OBDII options.

On my phone I use torque pro, there is also a free version. A quick
search for OBD on Google Play and you will also see the other options.

If you are going for an arduino setup you might want to check out some
of the non bluetooth adapters on deal extreme.

eBay is cheapest. You're looking for an ELM327, I think.

Mine was $15 + shipping from the mystical Orient. Or Hong Kong or some
place.

Get an Android app (pay for it, really) named Torque for nifty displays.

Awesome.

If anyone is more adventurous and doesn't mind wiring up lower level components you can get free samples of STN1110's
The STN1110 is fully compatible with the ELM327 command set and offers more features.
http://www.scantool.net/scan-tools/ics/stn1110.html

Sparkfun uses the STN1110 on their OBD-II board:

Here is the form for free samples

If anyone has troubles getting the free samples I would be willing to give away one of mine.

Also, if anyone is looking for a faster way to wire OBD support into their Arduino and don't mind paying, the microOBD is pretty slick

So is anyone going to try and do this with the OBD2 plugs. What this
guy did is amazing

Another video of the same guy talking a little more about it.

Plug computers are nice and only consume 2 watts of power. I would
love to have one.

Found this
http://www.gotrackinc.com/cat-52-1-2/gotrack_ez.htm
track vehicles. Kinda scary if someone stick one of these in your car
without you knowing about it.
The cost is too much though. I think it would be easier to use a cell
phone gps.

I got a couple of the STN1110 sample chips in the mail yesterday.
Now to come up with a cool use for them.
