I'm designing a tool-chain for a client that is using KVM-based virtualization (managed via libvirt) but has not yet made the move to OpenStack.

What are the choices for dynamic DNS management (preferably via a web API)?

I see that libvirt uses Dnsmasq (http://thekelleys.org.uk/dnsmasq/doc.html), but it doesn't seem to be a general purpose dynamic DNS tool.

Is the simple approach just to manage a local sub-domain with BIND?

nsupdate that ships with bind. http://linux.die.net/man/8/nsupdate

+1

It is what we use for our private cloud and works very well.

We also are using with our private cloud which is openstack based. We do not use dnsmasq for dns management of our VM instances. We are currently using nsupdate. But I would like us to move to something like smart proxy so that we are using a consistent method of changing dns that can also handle things like CNAMEs and other record types.

If domains can be public, you can leverage Rackspace's DNSaaS if your client is a Rackspace Cloud customer. It's low cost, as in free, for Rackspace Cloud customers. http://www.rackspace.com/cloud/cloud_hosting_products/dns/

My first inclination was bind
v9 and nsupdate

I just spotted this thread.

I organize the speakers for the Bay Area Large-Scale Production
Engineering
meetup (http://www.meetup.com/SF-Bay-Area-Large-Scale-Production-
Engineering/ ;
take a look at the "PAST" tab to see the kinds of events we've had).

For our March event, on Thursday March 22nd
(http://www.meetup.com/SF-Bay-Area-Large-Scale-Production-Engineering/
events/40058482/), I'm putting together an evening of talks on DNS-
related topics,
and am looking for speakers. I usually try to arrange two to four
20-25
minute talks around a single topic or theme -- this time it would be
DNS. I've
put some suggested topics there on the meetup page, but I'm open to
anything in
this area.

If you're going to be in the Bay Area on that date, and could give a
talk,
please contact me through that meetup, or at cwestin (at) yahoo (dot)
com.

Thanks!
