A couple things from the Detroit Free Press:
- The Tigers are doing "due diligence" on Arizona's right fielder, Justin Upton:

The Tigers would have to trade for Upton. Former Reds general manager Jim Bowden, now an analyst with ESPN, apparently thinks a package of Upton plus another player for Nick Castellanos, Avisail Garcia and Drew Smyly would be good.
- The Tigers are supposedly the front-runner to sign free agent outfielder Torii Hunter:

That's according to Bowden, too. Hunter reportedly wants to make a decision within the next two weeks. The Yankees and Dodgers are supposed to be interested in him, too.

In a DetNews article from this morning, Lynn Henning also talked about the
Justin Upton situation. His version had the Diamondbacks also "wanting"
Peralta (to move to 3B) as part of the package. Henning's (for the moment)
bottom line on this situation was that Arizona was asking "way too much"
(and that Upton had a few "ifs" in his resume anyway). He was far more in
favor of the Tigers getting Melky Cabrera (for a year), while Castellanos
and AGarcia "mature" (presumably for 2014). Henning's other main thrust was
that the Tigers should view Sanchez as "gone". He is reputed to have put his
own "line" at 6 years and $90M and Henning views this as "way too much" -
but acknowledges that there are teams out there (Toronto?) who will probably
step up to that. This also provides part of another reason not to send Smyly
off anywhere (see the Upton list). Henning seems to believe that Smyly
should probably be part of the 2013 5-man rotation anyway - and (to complete
the presumed set) doesn't think the Tigers should be giving up on Porcello
yet. This article did not happen to mention Torii Hunter at all. I happen to
think that Hunter might be a good addition (2 years?), but also think that
MelkyC might be an "interesting" addition (but only short term).

Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports (on Twitter). Hunter obtains $26MM over
two years, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports (on Twitter). The
contract with the Reynolds Sports Management client is pending a physical.
Hunter joins a Tigers lineup that includes Austin Jackson, Prince
Fielder, Miguel Cabrera and Victor Martinez. The Tigers view Hunter as a
number two hitter, Rosenthal reported yesterday. The 37-year-old figures
to play right field for Detroit with Jackson in center and an internal
option -- perhaps Andy Dirks or Avisail Garcia -- in left.

plate appearances as the Angels' right fielder last year. Advanced
metrics valued his performance above five wins, but he didn�t obtain a
qualifying offer from Los Angeles. Perhaps wary of his age and
league-best .389 batting average on balls in play, the Angels let Hunter
leave without compensation. That�s a bonus for the Tigers who don�t have
to surrender a draft choice to add their longtime AL Central rival.

It's not my money, but they've overpaid here. Probably could have spent less on another OF who is younger and could put up similar numbers as Hunter. However, this signing is okay from a roster standpoint. Despite doing okay after his callup Garcia still isn't really ready for the bigs and needs more time in the minors to develop power and plate discipline. Hunter for a couple of years bides time for Garcia and Castellanos to (hopefully) develop. Being in his late 30s Hunter may suddenly decline next year, but I'd still take him over Brennan Boesch or any other scrub the Tigers might throw out there in RF.
A problem with this deal is that it possibly takes away money they could throw after Anibel Sanchez. I want to see Sanchez come back.
He's more reliable than Porcello (or Smyly) as a #4 starter. However, I've been reading that Sanchez is now looking for $90-$100 million over 6 or 7 years. That's too much. Tigers might not want to pay that much for Sanchez and I wouldn't blame them. I'd rather take my chances with Smyly & Porcello in the #4 and #5 spots, or possibly sign a cheaper starting pitcher option, such as Dan Haren. But it's Mike Ilitch's money and he may still fork it over to keep Sanchez.

What's crazy is that Sanchez has done nothing to indicate he deserves that type of money in a long term contract. I'd over pay for two years but he hasn't even Ben a fade B pitcher for a whole year. I'd offer him two year at 8 mil per year max.
