DesertEquineBalance

The Desert Equine Balance Group is focused on Equine Nutrition in the Southwest and related discussions - especially those pertaining to the differences we often see in some area hays (Arizona, California, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, West Texas and other arid areas) as they pertain to all horses - not just those who are insulin resistant or have Cushing's disease.

Changes in weather patterns, growing practices, cost of production and an expanding export market are affecting the availability and quality of forage for our horses and have, in some instances, caused problems for horse owners. Because of these changes and the scarcity of reliable information I felt it would be helpful to horse owners to bring back the discussion group at this time.

The group managers support and follow NRC-based recommendations, along with guidelines developed by Eleanor Kellon, VMD, as they relate to all classes of horses and metabolic issues. We stress the importance and value of forage testing to ensure optimal nutrition for your horses and to avoid issues which could harm your horses such as excessively high iron or manganese and elevated levels of nitrates and sulfur.
