Subject: Personal Project Hosting
Hello all,

I started working with Rails a few months ago and after getting a
grasp on the basics I have gotten a few project ideas. So, while
developing, I have also been looking at hosting options. One thing
that caught my eye was 'Reseller Hosting'. Through hostgator.com
(http://www.hostgator.com/resellers.shtml) they offer 24gb of storage,
250gb of bandwidth, unlimited domains and they host rails apps (whoo
hoo!) for 25 bucks a month. I'm sure there are other hosting companies
that offer comparable packages so this just an example.

The rational behind this is that it would be a place for personal
projects to get started. Some place to see if your idea could be
successful. It would be $24 to $36 for a year depending on how many
people would go in on this. But if your application started using more
then obviously you would have to pay more. I haven't thought it out
entirely and I am open to any and all suggestions.

Would you guys be interested in something like this? Or is it a good
idea? Let me know.

Thanks,
Michael

I prefer slicehost.com for personal projects. It requires a bit of
sysadmin work to set things up, but you have way more flexibility in
the server setup. Many shared hosts use FCGI (which is slow), except
dreamhost which has just started using the awesome Phusion Passenger.
Also, with some shared hosts you can't install gems that require
compiling from source.

If you are already paying for comcast cable/internet why not just
setup your own box that you have full control over?

I've been hosting stuff at home for 10 months no problem.

Comcast does change your ip every 6 months or so but if I'm already
paying $50/month why not?

And if a personal project/app starts blowing up then I'd look into a
serious hosting provider.

That's true, I do have an old tower that I could use. But I have heard
that that method tends to melt machines... ;)
