Denver SQL Server User Group - Thursday May 21, 2009

Come join us this Thursday, May 21 for the SQL Server Users Group
monthly meeting. We again have two excellent presenters in Paul
Nielsen and Glenn Berry, both SQL Server MVPs. Paul, the author of
the Microsoft SQL Server Bible series, will talk about Advanced Data
Modeling. Glenn will cover how to use Dynamic Management Views for
diagnosing Perfomance. There will be food for all, time for you to
ask the group any technical questions about SQL Server, and there will
also be announcements concerning jobs and events that might be of
interest to you. The meeting will conclude with prize drawings
provided to us by our sponsers, including an MSDN Premium subscription
donated by Glenn Berry.

Coming Attractions

June: Ed Tomlinson of Dataface will present at our meeting to show us
how SQL Server supports Enterprise 2.0 applications.

July: SQL Sentry on performance troubleshooting and tuning for SSAS.

Presentation #1: Dr. DMV - Using DMV Queries to Detect and Diagnose
Performance Issues in a High-volume OLTP Environment

SQL Server 2005 introduced Dynamic Management Views (DMVs) that allow
you to see exactly what is happening inside your SQL Server instances
and databases with much more detail than ever before. SQL Server 2008
adds even more capability in this area. You can discover your top wait
types, most CPU intensive stored procedures, find missing indexes, and
identify unused indexes, to name just a few examples. This session
(which applicable to both 2005 and 2008), presents and explains over
fifteen DMV queries that you can quickly and easily use to detect and
diagnose performance issues in your environment.

Presenter:

Glenn works as a Database Architect at NewsGator Technologies in
Denver, CO. He is a SQL Server MVP, and he has a whole collection of
Microsoft certifications, including MCITP, MCDBA, MCSE, MCSD, MCAD,
and MCTS, which proves that he likes to take tests. He is also an
Adjunct Faculty member at University of Denver - University College,
where he has been teaching since 2000.

Presentation #2: Advanced Data Modeling

This presentation will push the boundaries of Data Modeling. Paul will
cover three concepts that have become critical for building a robust
database model: Generalization, Data-Driven Database Design, and
Object-Database Modeling. Paul will talk about these three topics and
will include explanations, examples, and code.

Presenter:

Paul Nielsen is a hands-on database developer, Microsoft SQL Server
MVP, and trainer specializing in data architecture and database
development using Microsoft SQL Server technologies. Paul presents
around the world at conferences such as Microsoft Tech Ed (Dev), SSWUG
Virtual Conference, SQL Teach (Canada), SQL Open World (Denmark), and
devLINK (Nashville), and PASS Summit. Besides holding several
certifications, Paul is an instructor with Learning Tree, served on
the Microsoft Education Domain Objectives panel for SQL Server 2005,
and was the Design-SME (subject matter expert) for the Microsoft
Official Course, 2784: Tuning and Optimizing Queries using Microsoft
SQL Server 2005. Paul has been developing data-centric solutions since
1982, and was the Enterprise Data Architect for Compassion
International, the technical editor for a database magazine, and a U.
S. Navy Submariner (Data Systems Tech Petty Officer).
