  The long time will only be on the first query that is not in the name &lt;br&gt; server&#39;s cache. Then the resolving server will have to crawl the DNS &lt;br&gt; servers from the root name servers down to the authorative name servers &lt;br&gt; for that domain. The speed of that resolution can depend on the speed &lt;br&gt; of many servers out on the Internet.

Load will vary radically depending on the services, like AirSync can have open sockets on the front ends, and some OS&#39;s need to be tweaked and ran in 64bit to get maximum density. Meaning a 32bit Linux might only achieve say +/- 8k sockets, while running it in 64bit with 16GB of memory you can take that up to 90k sockets.

  Thanks Lyle, I&#39;ve made the change to 15 secs so lets see what happens. I &lt;br&gt; did some digs on domains that were timing out and and was still &lt;br&gt; receiving response times of between 3 msec and 700msec so assumed that 3 &lt;br&gt; secs was more than enough. As far as I know it&#39;s always been 3 seconds. &lt;br&gt; We&#39;ve got three DNS servers in our DNS list with the last one being in

  Timeout for DNS should be longer than 3 seconds in my opinion. I am &lt;br&gt; running 15 seconds. Then I send things out using the List manager in CGP.
