A tip for those using Windows Live Mail on Windows 7 or Windows 8. An
unpleasant problem's been introduced by this month's Windows Update patches:

If you accidentally click the "globe" at the bottom right of the WLM window,
it will go offline, and will then STAY offline. As soon as you try to
retrieve or send mail, it will ask you if you want to work online, but won't
actually go online. It'll just repeatedly ask you if you want to go online.

The solution is to close WLM and then run Internet Explorer (has to be IE,
even if, like me, you don't use it as your default web browser) and try to
access any web page. IE will pop-up a box at the bottom of the screen
telling you that it went online to retrieve the web page, with a button
saying "Go back offline". DON'T click the button, but simply close IE. Now,
if you re-start WLM, all will be well again.

Apparently this piece of nastiness has been introduced in this month's
Windows Update patches to IE10. If you accidentally (or deliberately) go
offline in ANY of the "Windows Live..." programs (mail, messenger, etc) it
will STAY offline until you do the above.

Hope this avoids for someone the several hours of grief that it's caused me!

Chris
