As of 23:28 BST on 11 April:
ping homepages.demon.co.uk works
ftp gets 220 response and prompts for userid, followed by 331 password
required; but then it hangs.

There's definitely an intermittent problem with webhosting FTP. It
occasionally goes straight it, but more often than not it just times out
after either username or the password prompt. I reported it to business
technical support a few minutes ago. They reproduced the problem themselves
and have passed it on to the engineers.

Touch wood, it seems to be OK again now.

I had problems with FTP this morning (Friday 12 April) too.

It seems OK now.

My website was down for about 15 mins around 2300 on Wednesday 10 April.

Could this be warning signals? These problems usually escalate at the weekend.

FTP seriously broken again now. Attempting to connect either comes back
instantly with “Connection closed by remote host”, or it (very slowly) asks
for username and password, sits there for a minute, and THEN says
“Connection closed by remote host”. I’ll report it again.

Phoned support. They say that a number of services are down, they are aware
of it, and it's being looked at as a high-priority issue. These things
always seem to happen on a Friday afternoon :(.

Wow - that's impressive. Just had a call back from Demon to say that the
problem's been fixed, and sure enough it does seem to have been. VERY
impressed by my first contacts with business support. Competent people in
the UK. What a change from the Indian support of Home Office.

Fingers crossed it stays fixed.

I totally agree - it was worth upgrading to ADSL2+ just to get proper support.

The FTP server's still not right. Sometimes you get in right away, other
times there are long delays on either or both of the "User" and "Password"
prompts. Occasionally it hangs up entirely and eventually comes back with
"Connection closed by remote host". I'll report it again.

I phoned business support at 1005 Sunday.
He was "not aware of any problems". The team who deal with web support
are not in today and he asked me to "monitor the problem" and phone
again on Monday when the web support team will be in !

There's a consistent pattern to the problems. It works fine in the morning,
starts getting sluggish around lunchtime, and is totally dead in the
evenings. It looks like a load issue. Last night around 9pm it was totally
dead; this morning (Tue) it's working perfectly, but I bet that this evening
it'll be dead again.

I'll continue to report it every day until they do something about it. If
you want to add anything to the ticket I opened, Ian, the ticket reference
is 526600.

Even the phone lines are down!
When I call 0845 272 2666 there is just dead silence - no response.
I mentioned this on the Demon chat service and they assured me they
could call this number with no problems.

I've just been away for a week, and came back yesterday to find things just
as they were when this problem started on Thursday 11th. I'm going to phone
up Demon and have strong words. I'll let you know the outcome.

Good news - I hope. I spoke to a business support team leader called Martin.
He tells me that the engineers identified a faulty network device last
night, went out to site and replaced it, and the restarted all the MSH
servers this morning. He's asked me to keep an eye on things through today
and see how it goes, but engineers are hopeful that this will fix the
problem.

Fingers crossed...

Good news - I hope.

I spoke to Business Support as well. He said that this FTP problem had been "giving us a headache for some time now". Maybe they used Paracetamol to fix it :-)

So far this morning (Friday) FTP seems fine but my website has just been down for a few minutes in the browser.

My website seems to be OK, but I suspect there may be an issue with DNS.
I've had extremely long delays in resolving names. I tried to look at your
"Androsson Academy" site, for example, and it took a good 30s for the name
to resolve.

Damn it - Web hosting FTP is broken YET AGAIN.

This is getting absolutely ridiculous. I'm going to call support in a few
minutes and have a "frank exchange of views" with them. They are supposedly
offering a business web hosting service. I can't run my business like this.

I thought Demon were exiting the web hosting business. Their broadband
products no longer include web hosting and on their 'new' site the
only 'hosting' product they now offer is "Domain Names". The detail
they supply on this product is limited to put it mildly. However,
"Domain Hosting", "Web-Forwarding" and "Mail-Forwarding" would suggest
it doesn't include any server space apart from DSN.

I guess anyone relying on Demon for web hosting, critcal or indeed
otherwise, ought to start looking elsewhere.

Demon do indeed offer web hosting. My 'Ardrossan Academy' site is
hosted by Demon.
Look at the foot of this page, under Network Status, and you'll see a
green traffic light against Web Hosting.
http://help.demon.net
The green light is always green even when web hosting is down !
Perhaps they are 'maintaining' existing sites but not offering web
hosting to new customers?

Someone else said that if an existing customer changes tariff, they lose
their site even if a different existing customer on the new tariff has
one.

I think it was said that with BusinessLite+ Demon were going to stop
bundling in the 20MB of "free" webspace that they had included with
their Home and HomeOffice accounts. But no doubt one can still have web
hosting as a separate paid-for service or with a "full" business
account.

However though I upgraded to BusionessLite+ In January my free webspace
is still there, so what you suggest in your question might well be
right.

I had difficulty getting Demon to stop hosting one of my web sites
when I needed to shut the site down. I had to stop paying for it
before they took any notice of my needs. It was six months before the
site became unavailable. Even now the same site duplicated as my
homepage still exists.

Seems to be down again at the moment and I need it urgently. Was flakey
last night too. Seems to be an on-going issue. One wonders how such a
thing is possible ...
