Yesterday I noticed that the advertised monthly price for the above
service is £17.83 (incl. vat), while I'm being billed £22.51 (incl.
vat) for the same service.
I don't know how long this has been the case but upon contacting Demon
I was told that "This price is for new customers entering a 24 month
contract."
So, effectively I get a reduction of £4.68 per month if I am willing
to convert from my monthly contract to a 24 month contract - saving me
£112.32 over the two years. I wonder if I also qualify for a new
router?
I will probably do this but it's a bit annoying that they did not
contact me to offer this option.
I was on Demon Express, and I took me two years to wake up to that fact
that it didn't exist any longer, and had been replaced by an identical
HomeOffice 8000, which was 2pm cheaper. When I got them to change
things, I was billed 40 for a set-up charge. I envisaged a lengthy
'debate' over this but, fortunately, one of the Thus guys who reads this
NG 'had a quiet word', and I was refunded the 40. So, if you do change
your service, take care that you are not accidentally charged for it.
But I'm still 'automatically' on my original 12 month contract. There
was no mention of changing to anything else.
Anyway...
I also noticed the pricing for HO 2+, and realised that it seemed to be
less than the 22.51 which I am presently paying. I note that they have
options of 24 months @ 17.83pm or 12 months @ 19.78pm. Presumably you
will only qualify when you actually get ADSL 2+. At the moment, I'm
still on ADSL, and apparently there is no 'upgrade' in the pipeline
(which is probably fortunate, as I am a fair way from the exchange, and
doubt if I will really benefit).

Forgive me for nit-picking, but I seem to recall that Demon only started up
(as an ISP) around 1992, didn't they?
Cheers,
Chris
Other than the fact Demon have been an ISP for 17 years...

I was paying 24.46 a month - the almost original price. I've switched
to Business 2+ which reduced it to 19+vat and gets rid of the 60GB
limit. (I experiment with lots of different Linux systems and other
open-source stuff like ReactOS, and watch a lot of anime. BBC iPlayer
too.)
I was pleasantly surprised to see that not only could I keep my hostname
but even my IP address. Saves having to reprogram a lot of firewalls!

Experienced the same thing. Pointed out that I had never been offered
this deal and having been a loyal customer since 1995 I took a pretty
dim view of Demon's reward for my loyalty.
After a frank exchange of views it was agreed that I was unlikely to
cancel in the next 2 years and therefore the monthly charge would be
changed to 15.50 (ex VAT) from 02 November.
I also received a free Thomson wireless router.

Please advise 'some' HO_8K (ADSL) users on how you getting on with
upgrading to ADSL2+ = 17.83 / mth with 24 mths contract.
Ask 'Demon' : is it OK keeping the same hostname. No extra charge
moving to ADSL 2+ ????

You can only move to ADSL2+ when it becomes available at your local
exchange - at which point Demon will automatically move you from ADSL
Max ("8Mb ADSL") to ADSL2+.
There's no extra charge when this happens, and you keep the same
hostname.

Well, there don't appear to be any Demon Internet broadband access packages
on offer to new customers, which *don't* have the '2+' suffix.
The 'Demon Home 2+' blurb begins: "Using ADSL2+ technology where
available..." which I take to mean that non-ADSL2+-capable newcomers can
still buy the package, albeit supported by ADSLMax technology.
'Demon HomeOffice 2+' blurb doesn't use that phrase, but since it doesn't
say anything about having to be on one of their ADSL2+-capable exchanges
either, presumably the same inference can be drawn, i.e. the '2+' suffix is
part of the package branding, not part of its specification.
HomeOffice 8000 (which I too am on) looks like an orphaned product.
Therefore, I don't see any particular reason to presume that *existing*
non-ADSL2+-capable customers shouldn't qualify, unless they really are
being denied access to the currently-marketed packages.
On that basis, are you tempted after all?
As I'm still on the 21.27+VAT, I probably will. It's a £162 saving over the
course of the 2-year lockout, factoring in the reversion to 17.5% VAT.
Presumably, one is then back on one month's notice, but still on the lower
rate. (Is that how it works?)
++++++++++++
I guess :
The 'C&W punters' who did the business modelling assumed that a low
price broadband attract more new customers at the expense of existing
customers
Just think that 1000 existing customers with ADSL(H.O) move to
ADSL+2+ and save about 5.00/ mth then monthly income of C&W will
drop about 5000 / mth. Assuming 10000 existing customer try to save
about 5.00 then it will be unprofitable for C&W.
So, what will be the best excuse C&W will come up with, to prevent
people saving 5.00....let's debate...
It would be acceptable if C&W informed existing customers (by e-mail
!!) which products are obsolete and automatically migrated existing
customers to a lower pricing similar to existing ADSL(HO,2+,3+,
etc..), it is unlikely because it is too logical and unprofitable....
===========
Is that just speculation, or are you saying that they are actually
preventing such switches? I see nothing here to give the impression that
they are not allowing existing customers to switch, though admittedly I
have not tried it.

That would be 'desirable', perhaps. But in my opinion, allowing an existing
customer to switch is sufficient to be 'acceptable'.

But it seems so much longer.

VL would seem to be speculating, inaccurately.
No problems here and the order form arrived by email in minutes. Printed
copy appears to have been lost, by RM presumably and no doubt will be
delivered in x months time, but CS happy to get an electronic copy via
my Demon Account and the Credit Note arrived today.
One tip to save a phone call: go via Customer Services (who put me
straight through to Customer Care, Sales didn't have a mechanism for
current customers.
Painless and straightforward.

Thanks!
BTW, are you on an ADSL2+-enabled exchange?
Yep. Only a km from the exchange and the route the line takes is fairly
direct so get good speed. http://www.speedtest.net/result/625448155.png
Only one outage so far - that Sunday one everyone was complaining about
in here.

So, for the past X years, Demon have been shafting you royally. Do you
think they would let your current fee stay the same if the price went up?

Why stay with them?
I've been with them since 1993, they refuse to pay back what they've been
over charging me, even when I pointed it out last June (I'm on a yearly
pay in advance contract).
To cut a long story short, I'm off. Probably to Be. The scamming fucks at
demon can stick their shite customer service and sharp practise up their
arse.
I am not best pleased :)

IIRC, when VAT was reduced from 17.5% to 15.0%, the amount taken from me
was not reduced as promptly as I might have hoped. It will be of
interest to see whether there is a matching delay in implementing the
forthcoming rise.

Heh, indeed.
Messing with a customers fee is one thing, messing with HMRC is a whole
different ball game. Companies tend to try to avoid undue attention from
the VAT man...
IIRC vat is calculated on invoice date, so your first invoice after 31st
December should be at 17.5%. But you never know. That's probably far too
simplistic for our bureaucrats and you may be getting away with a few
quid in their eyes. There's probably something on HMRC website about it.
Try this - you wouldn't think it possible to write so much about such a
simple thing
