Dear Cyclistas,

Anyone interested in getting together for an informal bike repair workshop? I'm not an expert mechanic, but am willing to share what I know and others with experience are also welcome to share. The focus would be on more modern cycles with derailleurs. I figure it's easy get your common Atlas and Heros fixed by your local bike-wallah. Plus, it's good to know how even if someone else does it for you--smashing with a hammer is not the correct way to fix most problems.

I've taught myself to fix and maintain my own cycle:
  • Out of necessity (helpful when you're touring miles from civilization);
  • Because I don't trust anyone else to take good care of my cycle;
  • Saves money better spent on beer;
  • It's fun--if you don't mind getting your hands dirty.

Things that we could cover:
  • Overview of cycle parts and what they do;
  • Essential tools to carry;
  • Fixing flats;
  • Pre-ride and monthly maintenance checks;
  • Drivetrain overview: adjusting F&R derailleurs, shifters;
  • Brakes overview: brake pad installation, adjustment;
  • Cable replacement;
  • Wheel alignment and truing;
  • Defensive takedowns, throws and strikes--whoops, different workshop!

Please reply to this thread if interested. Sundays would be the best day of the week. I would suggest somewhere like Lodi Garden?

cheers,

Tak

Well I would love to be the part of this workshop. As I am always curious to know more about my bike and to fix it even.
Thanx for the initiative.

Request you to float the date ASAP and I hope lot more fellow cyclist would love to share and learn out of it.

Thanx

Hi all,

This is a great idea to have bicycle repair workshop.

@ Tak thanks for bringing this useful and much needed exercise for our group members and fellow cyclists.

Supporting the suggestion of Dilip, I also propose to do it on Sunday 6th December tentatively between 10.30 am and 12.30 pm after the Climate Ride on Delhi BRT corridor with two things in mind:

1. we are being provided some space by DIMTS for the event at Ambedkar Nagar Terminal parking.

2. DCC have already arranged for Two bicycle mechanics to be present and assist/follow the cyclists during the ride. We can utilise them also.

Another suggestion if we decide to keep this repair workshop on 6th we can ask our mechanics to demonstrate and teach our group memebrs on how to disintegrate and assemble the entire bicycle and its parts in short time. We can also invite technical people from some biycle companies at this to make it more useful and inclusive.

But if its not suitable to people on 6th Dec then we can plan it for 12th/13th Dec (Sat/Sun) morning any of the following places depending upon convenience of most members:

- Lodi Gardenr
- Pragati Maidan/Patel Chowk Metro station bike parking
- upcoming Bicycle station at BRT corridor

I think if our bicycle repair workshop/training programme goes well, then we should certainly plan to do it regularly in future. I guess we can arrange for some small funds for this.

regards,

Nalin Sinha

Great idea, please have it on 06 Dec and then repeat it after a couple

It seems that there's some interest in this. :)

I think that Sunday the 6th is a good day. Perhaps from 2 to 4 pm?

Rajendra, while I appreciate the extension of DCC's support for this,
personally I'm not as keen on making it into an official event with
industry reps. I would rather leave it more informal. My aim is to not
only familiarize people with very basic cycling maintenance, but to
also help bring people interested in cycling together offline.

However, I think that this thread shows that there is a considerable
need for basic maintenance classes. Despite the introduction of high
end cycles in Delhi, there's a lag in fostering a larger cycling
ecosystem and support system.

You can only cover flat fixing and other few other basic things in one
session. A more sustainable process would be to establish a series of
maintenance courses, covering basic to intermediate repair would need
to be given over a number of weeks. This would be the type of
initiative that DCC would be well suited for.

Tak,

If we have to do bicycle workshop on 6th Dec then we should plan it between around 10.30/11.00 am-12 noon at Climate Ride venue (near Ambedkar Nagar Terminal) since there would be many memebrs from our group present.

doing it around 2 to 4 pm may not be suitable and dificult for people to attend. but if it doesn't suite most people on 6th morning then it can be considerd for 12th/13th dec.

I agree with your thoughts on long-term planning and ways for doing for such events.

Dear Rajendra,

While I appreciate an opportunity to reach many people at this Climate Change event. I have a few issues:

  • Venue: I'm not sure if it would be a great place (granted I haven't seen the parking lot), but I think that it would be difficult to give a small workshop there. That's why I prefer a more pleasant environment like Lodhi Gardens. Of course, if people want to cycle up there afterwards, that's fine with me...
  • Audience: I'm more interested in meeting people who are serious about learning more about their cycles. Whether it's 1 person or 20 people. Therefore, I'm not sure if aiming for maximum exposure is actually productive.
    • Also, you can't really teach someone much about cycle maintenance and repair in a 1 to 2-hour workshop. One can cover how to fix a flat and basic, monthly maintenance at the most.

If there's enough interest, I might organize a few more gatherings to cover things like drivetrain and brake maintenance. Again I appreciate the idea of clubbing this repair session with the climate ride, but I would prefer a more informal, intimate gathering for the reasons specified above.

Best,

TAk

ok then tentatively let's keep it at Lodi Garden after the ride around 11 /11.30 am if its suits most poeple. we can cycle from the climate ride venue to Lodi.

also can anyone suggest a suitable and economical place to have a group lunch after the bicycle workshop near lodi garden.

Hi Vinay,

the total distance of the ride is 11-km (Ambedkar Nagar-Moolchand-Ambedkar Nagar) and from Ambedkar Nagar to Lodi Garden is around 10 kms one way.

but yes i guess you query has made me realise that it could be very strenuou for riders.

and its leaves us with only two options either to do it on at the climate ride venue or postpose for next week.

I'll just go ahead for 2-4 pm in the afternoon this coming Sunday. Anyone who's interested can just show up after the ride and a little rest.

It's probably enough time for people to load their cycles into their SUVs and drive to Khan market for lunch. :p
