Over a dozen Delhi-birders, including a few fresh enthusiasts, made it to Sultanpur NP this morning to celebrate the World Migratory Bird Day (WMBD) 2010 being observed this weekend to highlight migratory birds in crisis. Perhaps, being a Sunday, we didn't find the going or the return journey as tiresome as Anand's experience a couple of days ago.

Amongst the winter migrants at Sultanpur this morning, Blyth's Reed Warbler were quite numerous, calling from the low shrubbery along the bund as well as the tall acacia near the entrance.The water body at the centre is rapidly drying up and carcass of many dead fish were littered all over. No wintering ducks here though a few wintering waders were still present here, which included a dozen Spotted Redshanks in their breeding plumages, completely metamorphosed from their non-breeding winter plumage into charcoal black colours. Also a few Little & Teminck's Stints, Black-tailed Godwits,Wood Sandpiper and Common Greenshanks here.
The usual residents included Painted Storks, Little, Intermediate & Great Egrets, Grey Herons, Eurasian Spoonbills, Blackwinged Stilts, Little Ringed Plovers, Plain & Ashy Prinia, Small Minivets, Common Wood-shrikes, Black--rumped Flamebacks, Purple Swamphen, Common Moorhen, scores of Spot-billed Ducks, Comb Ducks, Red Avadavat, Indian Silverbills, Oriental White-eye, Plain Martin, Red-rumped Swallow, Wire-tailed Swallow, Indian peafowl, Greater Coucal, White-throated & Pied Kingfishers, Paddyfield Pipit, Crested Lark, Ashy-Crowned sparrow-Lark, Black & Grey Francolin etc. Also the season's first Cinnamon Bittern for me here. Pankaj who joined us after doing the Basai 'beat' informed us about sighting a congregation of eleven Sarus Cranes near Dhankot village besides other assorted waders, including Greater Painted-Snipe at Basai.
Later, after the usual sumptuous breakfast that was punctuated by flutey calls of golden Oriole from a nearby tree, most of drove towards the flats and added nice views of an Indian Courser to our day's delights.
