So it turns out that the crashes that were experienced go all the way
down to the compiler (gcc) used to create the R 2.13 mac binaries.
For those interested here is what happened:
R 2.13 adds some new multi-threaded features to R (GOMP), but
unfortunately GOMP support is broken in gcc 4.2
(http://gcc.gnu.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=36242). This caused a
crash whenever R entered multi-threaded code. For example a simple
call to scale(mtcars) would crash JGR. Note that this bug can also
affect linux users if they compile R with gcc 4.2.
The solution:
The next version of R will solve the issue, but in the mean time, mean
time mac users should upgrade to the patched version of R available at
http://r.research.att.com/ .
