red - and orange, blue and green
Artists are giving a new look to the Moose Lodge near Five Corners in
San Jacinto
By Katie Orloff
Staff Writer
Add another mural to downtown San Jacinto.
Artists from Golden Era Productions started Saturday to turn the wall
of the Moose Lodge near Five Corners into a reflection of the nearby
mountains and a tribute to the city's history.
While still working to finalize the design, Wiebke Hansen, Jimmy Yeoh
and Kerrie Francis began transforming the east side of the blue
building. Orange will depict a sunset sky and green the San Jacinto
Valley's floor before it filled with homes and businesses.
They plan to paint the mountains to the east. The painted mountains
will be blue, to depict how they would look at sunset.
Golden Era Productions approached members of the Royal Order of Moose
in San Jacinto with the idea as a way to do something nice for the
community, according to Muriel Dufresne, public relations director for
Golden Era.
Golden Era Productions makes training and education films for Church
of Scientology members.
Hansen paints backdrops that are used for filming in a
75,000-square-foot sound studio. By comparison, she said the
96-by-14-foot wall on the Moose lodge is no big deal.
"This is a small wall for me," she said.
A cluster of smaller paintings in the center of the mural will also
depict parts of local history. A train will pay tribute to the old
Santa Fe Railway that formerly ran through the San Jacinto Valley. One
will depict the Virginia Lee Hotel in 1884 when it was called the
Pioneer Hotel.
The artists also plan to include the Russian plane that made an
emergency landing in a San Jacinto cow pasture in 1937.
Other ideas being considered include San Jacinto High School and the
Estudillo Mansion, according to Dufresne.
"There's a lot of really neat history in the valley," Dufresne said,
"and it needs to be recorded so people can be made aware of it."
The artists chose to depict the mountains at sunset partly to
complement the mural opposite theirs on the side of Lopez Market. The
existing mural depicts mountains during the day, with a blue sky and
white clouds.
History lessons aside, Dufresne said she hopes the painting will just
make people feel better.
"Somebody can be walking by and they may be having a bad day," she
said. "They may see this and say 'Things must not be so bad after
all.'"
