3 CPUs
======

Die CPU (Central Processing Unit = Prozessor) ist die zentrale
Recheneinheit deines Computers und damit auch zum grᅵᅵten Teil an der
Geschwindigkeit beteiligt. Sie ist bei fast allen Aufgaben
(mit-)entscheident fᅵr die benᅵtigte Zeit in der diese ausgefᅵhrt
werden.
PC-CPUs sind so genannte x86-CPUs. Eine CPU zᅵhlt dann als x86, wenn sie
zum Intel 8086 bzw. in den meisten Fᅵllen auch zum 80386 kompatibel ist.
Dazu gehᅵren z.B. neben Intels Pentium-Familie auch die Prozessoren von
AMD, wie etwa die K6- und Athlon-Familie. Ferner die Prozessoren
von VIA bzw. Cyrix, Transmeta und einigen weiteren kleinen Unternehmen.


3.1 Taktraten - wodurch bestimmt?
=================================

Diverse Taktraten eines Rechners leiten sich hᅵufig (nicht immer -
s.u.) aus dem dem Takt des Front Side Bus ab. Der FSB ist der
Datenbus zwischen Chipsatz und der CPU bei einer klassischen
Bridge- oder Hub-Architektur (siehe Kapitel 2.1.3 und 2.1.4).

Der Takt des FSB ist (meist) ein ganzzahliges Vielfaches von 33MHz.
Daher sind FSB-Takte von 66, 100, 133, 166 und 200MHz gebrᅵuchlich.
Hᅵhere Taktraten, wie 266MHz sind ebenfalls mᅵglich.

33MHz ist der Bezugstakt, da der klassische PCI Bus mit 33MHz arbeitet.
Allerdings ist der FSB-Takt die Referenz fᅵr den PCI-Takt: Der
PCI-Takt ist (meist) mittels eines Taktteilers an den FSB-Takt
gekoppelt. ᅵndert man den FSB-Takt, ohne einen anderen Taktteiler zu
benutzen, wird somit der PCI-Bus ᅵbertaktet. Der AGP-Takt ist stets
doppelt so hoch, wie der PCI-Takt. Eine ᅵbertaktung des FSB wirkt sich
also auch auf den AGP aus. Es existieren aber Chipsᅵtze, wo FSB-Takt
und PCI-Takt nicht durch ein festes Verhᅵlnis gekoppelt sind (z.B.
nVidia nForce2). Die genauere Beschreibung der erwᅵhnten
Schnittstellen befindet sich in Kapitel 5.

ᅵbertrᅵgt man in einem Taktschritt 2 Datenbits, so spicht man von
Double Data Rate (DDR). Alle 32Bit AMD Athlons setzen dieses Verfahren
beim FSB ein. Bei DDR-RAM sagt schon der Name, dass auch hier dieses
Verfahren genutzt wird. Da theoretisch durch das DDR-Verfahren die
doppelte Datenmenge transportiert werden kann, wird aus
Marketing-Grᅵnden oft z.B. von "effektiv 400MHz (FSB400)" gesprochen,
wenn der FSB mit tatᅵchlich 200MHz betrieben wird. Bei RAM gelten
gleichartige Bezeichnungen: DDR400-RAM (auch: PC3200 siehe Kapitel
8.4.7) taktet mit 200MHz.

Werden bei einem Taktschritt gar 4 Datenbits, so spricht man von Quad
Data Rate. Dieses Verfahren wird beim Pentium 4 eingesetzt. Auch hier
exisiteren Marketingbezeichnungen, wie FSB533 fᅵr einen FSB mit
QDR-Verfahren und 133MHz Takt.

In frᅵheren Systemen waren FSB und CPU-Takt identisch. Das konnte
aber bei hᅵheren Taktraten nicht mehr beibehalten werden, da
Signallaufzeiten auf Mainboards den PCI-Takt limitieren. Als
Konsequenz darauf wurde ein Taktmultiplikator eingefᅵhrt. Er
bestimmt das Verhᅵltnis von CPU-Takt zu FSB-Takt. Beispiel: Ein
Celeron 800 besitzt einen FSB-Takt von 100 MHz und somit ist der
Multiplikator acht.

Der Multiplikator ist heute normalerweise "locked", d.h. in der CPU
festgelegt. Er wird bei der Fertigung einmalig eingestellt. Manchmal
existieren aber Mᅵglichkeiten, diese Sperre zu umgehen, zum Beispiel
bei den 32Bit Durons und Athlons von AMD: Sie lassen sich durch das
Schlieᅵen der L1-Brᅵcken (mit Graphit (ein Bleistift) oder Leitlack,
nᅵheres dazu in Kapitel 9.5) dazu "ᅵberreden" ihren normalen
Multiplikator durch einen auf dem Motherboard oder im BIOS
eingestellten zu ersetzen. Beim Athlon 64 FX ist der Multiplikator
sogar schon mit der Auslieferung unlocked und kann -ein passendes
Mainboard vorausgesetzt- frei gewᅵhlt werden. VIA-CPUs vom C3 bis
zum Eden ESP ohne festen Multiplikator tragen ein "S" in der
Bezeichnung. Die meisten ᅵlteren CPU bis (Super)Sockel7 sind
ebenfalls nicht "locked".
Ist eine CPU nicht "unlockable" so kann sie nur ᅵbertaktet werden,
wenn der Takt des FSB angehoben wird.

[1] Der schnellste 486er fᅵr den Sockel 2 war der DX/2 mit 66 MHz;
der Pentium Overdrive mit 63 (fᅵr Systeme mit 25 MHz Boardtakt)
und 83 MHz (fᅵr solche mit 33 MHz Boardtakt) wurde erst spᅵter
vorgestellt.

Sockel A
========
Obwohl der Sockel A die gemeinsame Basis fᅵr eine Vielzahl von
Prozessoren der AMD Athlon-Familie (32 Bit) bildet, sind im Laufe der
Zeit wesentliche ᅵnderungen bei der Spannungsversorgung und beim
FSB-Takt vollzogen worden. Der FSB erreichte Taktraten von 100 MHz
(DDR200), 133MHz (DDR266), 166MHz (DDR333) und 200MHz (DDR400). Somit
kann bei weitem nicht jede Sockel A CPU auf jedem Sockel A Mainboard
betrieben werden. Letztendlich hilft nur ein Blick in die
Kompatibilitᅵtsliste der Mainboardhersteller.

Sockel 8
========
Dem Pentium Pro (Bauform: Sockel 8) war im Desktop-Markt kein groᅵer
Erfolg beschieden, da er nur 32-Bit-Code schnell ausfᅵhren konnte (das
ging aufgrund der verᅵnderten Architektur deutlich schneller als beim
Pentium); 16-Bit-Code, wie er 1996 noch hᅵufig vorkam, bremste den
Prozessor dagegen aus, so dass er dort nicht einmal so schnell war wie
ein Gleichgetakteter Pentium.
Dem im Pentium Pro verwendete P6-Kern war spᅵter dann doch Erfolg
beschieden: Leicht verᅵndert fand er sich im Pentium II wieder. Bis
zum Pentium 4 (der komplett neu entwickelt wurde) basieren sᅵmtliche
Intel-Prozessoren auf dem Pentium Pro-Kern.

Sockel 370 PPGA, FC-PGA und FC-PGA2
===================================
Das PPGA, FC-PGA und FC-PGA2 alle den gleichen Sockel 370 nutzen,
heiᅵt leider nicht, das eine CPU in allen Boards mit dem Sockel370
funktioniert. Grundsᅵtzlich gelten diese Regeln:
- S370-PPGA-Boards unterstᅵtzen nur PPGA-CPUs.
- S370-FC-PGA-Boards unterstᅵtzen oft PPGA- und immer FC-PGA-CPUs.
FC-PGA2-CPUs (solche mit Tualatin-Kern und Heatspreader) sind nur
mit Spezialadaptern oder "dirty hacks" (Tualatin-Mod bei Boards mit
Intel-Chipsatz) nutzbar, da sie eine geringfᅵgig abweichende
Pinbelegung aufweisen und die Spannung auf dem GTL+-Bus von 1.5 auf
1.25 V abgesenkt wurde (bei ᅵberspannung startet die CPU nicht).
ᅵhnliches gilt fr Slot1-Boards.
Achtung: Auch einige Prozessoren mit Coppermine-Kern wurden mit
Heatspreader ausgestattet, der Aufdruck ermᅵglicht jedoch die
eindeutige Identifikation etwa ᅵber die Kernspannung.
- S370-FC-PGA2-Boards unterstᅵtzen selten PPGA- und immer
FC-PGA(2)-CPUs. Allerdings abhᅵngig von verschiedenen Faktoren auch
nicht alle, bei den CPUs mit 1400MHz gibt es manchmal Probleme.
- VIA nennt die zum Sockel370 kompatiblen CPUs EBGA
(Enhanced Ball Grid Array).
Genaue Informationen zu diesen Fragen findet man zumeist beim
Hersteller des Motherboards (Kapitel 7.4 und Kapitel 13.2 geben
weiteren Aufschluᅵ ᅵber Hersteller des Boards und seine Webseite).

Sockel 423
==========
Der Sockel 423 wird und wurde ein Flop durch die Ankᅵndigungen
des nᅵchsten Sockels vor dem Erscheinens des Pentium 4. Der
neue Sockel 478 hat im Herbst 2001 den Sockel 423 abgelᅵst, neue
Pentium 4-CPUs erscheinen nicht mehr fᅵr den Sockel 423. Eine Nutzung
neuerer So478-CPUs (mit einem FSB von 100 MHZ) ist aber teilweise mit
Hilfe von Adaptern mᅵglich.

3.4 Welche CPU habe ich?
========================

Um den verwendeten CPU-Typ und genauere Eigenschaften ᅵber diesen
zu erfahren gibt es mehrere Mᅵglichkeiten.

3.4.1 Tools der Hersteller
======================

3.4.1.1 Intel
=============
Ist der CPU-Typ bekannt (oder Teile der Bezeichnung) kᅵnnen folgende
Seiten zur vollstᅵndigen Identifikation weiterhelfen:

Hier genᅵgt es, die 'sSpec Number' (5stellige Buchstaben-/
Zahlenkombination) einzugeben um an detaillierte Informationen ᅵber
die CPU zu kommen. Schrittweise ᅵber CPU-Typ, Sockel etc. ist dies
auch mᅵglich.

Ein unter DOS bootfᅵhiges Programm von Intel namens
'Processor Frequency ID Utility' lᅵsst sich unter

3.4.1.2 AMD

Bei AMD lᅵsst sich ein DOS-Programm namens 'cpuinfo.exe' unter

entsprechen in etwa denen von 'WCPUID'.

3.4.2. Tools von Drittanbietern
===============================
Den verwendeten CPU-Typ kann man unter Windows z.B. mit
"WCPUID" feststellen, offizielle Homepage: http://www.h-oda.com.
Falls der Download dort zu langsam ist reicht das Suchen nach
WCPUID bei jeder Suchmaschine um genᅵgende Ergebnisse hervorzubringen.

Alternativ kann man das ᅵhnliche CPU-Z verwenden, die
Herstellerhomepage lautet http://www.cpuid.com.

Eine weitere Freeware wᅵre CPUInfo von
http://www.pcanalyser.de/deu/index.html

Fᅵr DOS ist Dr. Hardware geeignet. Man kann es auf der
offiziellen Seite http://www.drhardware.de erhalten.

Unter Linux ist (falls vorhanden) 'cat /proc/cpuinfo' mᅵglich, bei
vielen Distributionen gibt es auch das Paket cpuid (Fᅵr Debian:
apt-get install cpuid; Andere Distributionen bieten ᅵhnliche
Pakete an).


3.5 Mobiler Einsatz - spezielle Anforderungen und Anpassungen
=============================================================

Mit der wachsenden Beliebtheit von tragbaren Rechnern (Notebooks,
Subnotebooks, Tablet-PCs) rᅵcken auch die dort verbauten Prozessoren
stᅵrker in den Blickpunkt. Generell kann man mehrere Typen von
Prozessoren unterscheiden:

3.5.1 Desktop-CPUs
==================

Insbesondere der Pentium 4 gehᅵrt in diese Kategorie. Diese
Prozessoren sind ganz gewᅵhnliche Exemplare, wie sie auch in
Desktop-Rechnern zum Einsatz kommen, mit hoher Verlustleistung,
keinerlei Stromsparfunktionen (von Throttling einmal abgesehen,
siehe 4.5.4) und eher niedriger zulᅵssiger Maximaltemperatur, damit
hohem Kᅵhlbedarf. Stᅵndiges Lᅵfterrauschen und/oder starke Erwᅵrmung
der eher klobigen Gerᅵte sind an der Tagesordnung, zudem bedingt der
hohe Energieverbrauch meist wenig ᅵberzeugende Akkulaufzeiten trotz
hoher Akkukapazitᅵten. Desktop-CPUs werden typischerweise in sehr
billigen Notebooks oder Desktop-Replacements (also eher groᅵen
Gerᅵten mit einer Ausstattung, die der von stationᅵren Rechnern
Konkurrenz macht) verbaut.


3.5.2 Mobile-CPUs mit hᅵherer Verlustleistung
=============================================

Hierzu zᅵhlen vor allem Mobile Pentium 4-M (kurz mP4-M) und Mobile
Athlon XP (kurz mA-XP [mit DECs Alphas hat der nichts zu tun, daher
nicht mAXP]). Diese bieten alle Stromsparfunktionen, die man so
braucht (dazu spᅵter mehr), verbraten aber dennoch maximal bis zu
30-40 W und sind aufgrund der dafᅵr nᅵtigen Kᅵhlsysteme fᅵr sehr
dᅵnne Notebooks kaum geeignet. Zwischen mP4-M und Desktop-P4 ist der
Mobile Pentium 4 angesiedelt, der die Stromsparfunktionen des mP4-M
bietet, bei vollem Takt aber mit Kernspannungen vergleichbar denen
von Desktop-Exemplaren lᅵuft und dann auch ᅵhnliche
Verlustleistungen aufweist. Die Prozessoren dieser Kategorie sind
ausnahmslos von Desktop-CPUs abgeleitete Designs (siehe 3.5.3.1).


3.5.3 Echte Mobile-CPUs
=======================

Hierzu zᅵhlen vor allem der Pentium-M (Banias- und Dothan-Kern), der
Mobile Pentium III-M (kurz mPIII-M), die Low-Voltage-Versionen des
Mobile Athlon XP und der Transmeta Crusoe. Diese eignen sich auch
fᅵr den Einsatz in Subnotebooks, die typischerweise aufgrund der
geringen Akkukapazitᅵten sehr stromsparend sein mᅵssen und keinen
Platz fᅵr ein groᅵzᅵgig dimensioniertes Kᅵhlsystem bieten. Sie sind
(mal abgesehen vom Crusoe) oftmals auch in Low-Voltage- und
Ultra-Low-Voltage-Versionen mit weiter reduzierten Kernspannungen
verfᅵgbar, die z.B. in Subnotebooks, Mini-Notebooks und Tablet-PCs
zum Einsatz kommen. Man kann in dieser Kategorie nochmals zwei Arten
von Prozessoren unterscheiden:

3.5.3.1 Von Desktop-Prozessoren abgeleitete Designs
===================================================

Dies ist der klassische Ansatz. Hierhin gehᅵren der mPIII-M, der
mA-XP und der mP4-M. Die Vertreter dieser Gattung sind im
wesentlichen Desktop-Prozessoren mit diversen Stromsparfunktionen
(u.a. Reduktion von Takt und Kernspannung in einer oder mehreren
Stufen [Intel: SpeedStep, AMD: PowerNow] und "Tiefschlaf-Modi" mit
weiter reduzierter Stromaufnahme gegenᅵber normalem Leerlauf
[d.h. Einsatz des HLT-Befehls]).


3.5.3.2 Eigene Mobil-Designs
============================

Diese Prozessoren wurden speziell fᅵr den Einsatz als
Mobilprozessoren entworfen und haben sonst keine Entsprechung.
Hierunter fallen insbesondere Intels Pentium-M und Transmetas
Crusoe.

Der Pentium-M ist in gewissem Sinne ein "klassischer" x86er - auf
den ersten Blick erkennt man einige Elemente des P6-Designs (also
PPro/PII/PIII/Celeron abzᅵglich P4-Celeron), was wenig verwundert,
hatten doch die Entwickler vorher am "Timna" gearbeitet, der eine
Art Celeron mit integriertem Grafikcore und Speichercontroller
werden sollte; der Prozessorbus ist eine Variante des
Pentium-4-Busses mit niedrigerer Spannung. Daneben finden sich aber
auch jede Menge Dinge, die implementiert wurden, um die Effizienz
des Prozessors zu erhᅵhen und den Stromverbrauch zu reduzieren:
Eine verbesserte Sprungvorhersage, die Abschaltung und lediglich
gezielte Aktivierung von einzelnen Segmenten des groᅵen L2-Caches,
die Mᅵglichkeit zum separaten Abschalten von vielerlei
Prozessorteilen, deutlich reduzierte Leckstrᅵme (ab 0.13ᅵ ein
ernstzunehmendes Problem) sowie endlich auch Speedstep mit mehr
Taktstufen. In der Summe handelt es sich um einen Prozessor, der
bezᅵglich Rechen- und Verlustleistung den mP4-M das Fᅵrchten lehrt
und hinsichtlich der Mobiltauglichkeit endlich wieder an den
mPIII-M anschlieᅵt.

Der Transmeta Crusoe ist gᅵnzlich anders konzipiert: Dieser
VLIW-Prozessor (Very Long Instruction Word, die Datenworte sind 128
bzw. 256 Bit lang) fᅵhrt sᅵmtlichen x86-Code mittels seiner
Code-Morphing-Software in einer Art Emulation aus (womit er
eigentlich nicht auf x86 beschrᅵnkt ist, sondern auch ganz andere
Architekturen emulieren kᅵnnte), wobei zusᅵtzlich der Programmablauf
im Laufe der Zeit weiter optimiert wird. Der Stromspartrick besteht
darin, daᅵ der eigentliche Prozessorkern weitaus einfacher (und #
damit: weniger stromhungrig) gehalten werden kann als es fᅵr die
Realisierung von x86-Kompatibilitᅵt ganz in Hardware vonnᅵten wᅵre.
Der groᅵe Durchbruch blieb dem innovativen Konzept bisher verwehrt,
waren doch die erzielten Rechenleistungen eher moderat.
