Washington, DC [CapitalWirePR] February 24, 2011 – Ted Loza has acknowledged accepting cash gifts totaling $1,500.00 while serving as chief of staff to Ward 1 Councilman Jim Graham. With that action in court, Loza has accepted a plea offer related to accepting gratuities. In the plea agreement, the most serious charges of conspiracy, bribery and extortion were dismissed.
As a community activist and civil servant, Loza touched the lives of many DC citizens over the course of years. Here are a few community reactions on the court proceedings from those who have worked with Loza in the District’s Hispanic community:
· Franklin Garcia: “I welcome these new developments to clear the air about all of the charges related to Ted Loza’s indictment and the reflection it casts on our Hispanic community. The most troubling allegations did not stand up. On the whole, Ted has been a contributor to the District and its Hispanic residents in particular. Among other things Ted helped found our Democratic Latino Caucus. Once this is behind him, I am confident he will again be an energetic presence in Washington.” Garcia is President of the DC Latino Caucus of the Democratic Party.
· Jackie Reyes: “I worked with Ted for five years on Councilman Graham’s staff. He was a great mentor to me to help navigate the District government on behalf of the Hispanic community. Ted was tireless in his efforts on behalf of scores of displaced families after the 3135 Mt. Pleasant fire. These are the things I want to say about Ted Loza.” Reyes is Director of Latino Affairs for Councilman Jim Graham in Ward 1.
· Roxana Olivas: “Ted has supported the community in many ways. He was always one of the first to be there in a crisis. Let’s not forget what he has done, particularly for the disadvantaged in our Latino community.”
· Saul Solorzano: “This is a very unfortunate situation. I’m glad it’s not as serious as it was painted out to be at the beginning. I hope he makes it through the ordeal. He has the energy to do good again for the community.” Solorzano is the executive director of CARECEN, the Central American Resource Center.
Sentencing for the 2 gratuity felonies and 1 reporting misdemeanor will take place on May 12th.
