Friends and Fellow Democrats –
I am writing to you to inform you that I am a candidate for a seat in Central Committee of the Virginia Democratic Party (Central Committee). I am running from Alexandria and seek to have a seat for the 8th Congressional District of Virginia. To accomplish this I need your help. I am asking for your attendance and your vote this Saturday, May 18, at the 8th Congressional District Committee Convention at:
Robert E. Lee High School
6540 Franconia Road
Springfield, VA 22150
Registration will start at 9:00 a.m.
During the Convention you will get the opportunity to elect candidates for the Central Committee. To participate in the Convention you must be a resident and registered voter in the 8th Congressional District, which encompasses Arlington County, parts of Fairfax County, and the independent cities of Alexandria and Falls Church. Convention attendees will sign-in between 9:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. and have their names checked against a registered voters list for their jurisdiction. Registration will cease at 10:00 a.m. with the exception that anyone in line at 10:00 a.m. will be eligible for registration. After registration, attendees will join the jurisdiction caucus composed of other residents of their jurisdiction. The jurisdictions will nominate members to the Central Committee and cast their votes. The voting process should be completed by approximately 11/11:30 a.m.
So, why I am running for the Central Committee? First of all, for those of you who are unfamiliar with the Central Committee; let me take a moment to explain what it is. The Central Committee is the organizing body of the Virginia Democratic Party that is charged with full control of all Party matters arising throughout the Commonwealth. All powers that inhere in the Virginia Democratic Party or in a State Convention are vested in the Central Committee. The Central Committee is also charged with the important task to “perfect the organization of the Democratic Party throughout the Commonwealth and to do all within its power to aid in the victory of the Democratic Party’s nominees in all elections.” I feel that given my extensive history of local civic participation and service to the Alexandria Democratic Party (ADC), I am ready to take the next step and contribute to the larger efforts of the State Democratic Party.
As the Vice-Chair for the Communications Committee of the ADC, I have worked tirelessly to organize activities and events that ensure that the organization continues to confront the relevant issues and engage the essential stakeholders that can help Alexandria to thrive. For over five years now, I have also worked with the Democratic Latino Organization of Virginia (DLOV) with the specific objective of engaging and activating the Latino vote in order to secure Democratic victories in Virginia during the 2008 and 2012 Presidential elections and subsequent Virginia Congressional and statewide races. I worked closely with DLOV and the Democratic National Committee to ensure that the Latino electorate remained potent in Virginia. Prior to moving to Virginia I was involved with the Washington DC Latino Caucus and helped the organization to increase its outreach to young Latino voters in the DC area.
Throughout all my efforts and involvement with the various Democratic Party organizations, I have come to experience a convergence of values, philosophies, and sense of purpose between myself and the Democratic Party. To bolster my participation within the larger Democratic community of Virginia and to amplify my contribution to the betterment Commonwealth, I am declaring my candidacy for a seat in the Central Committee.
I seek to bring a fresh, diverse, and unique perspective to the work of Central Committee, as well as a deep dedication to advancing the ideals of the Democratic Party. I also seek to increase the Latino representation to the Central Committee and ultimately to the Virginia Democratic Party. To accomplish this I plan to work diligently at increasing the State Party’s focus and outreach activities to Virginia’s marginalized and immigrant communities. I believe that as the demographic composition of Virginia continues to change, the Party must actively connect with and recruit vibrant leaders from within these communities so that they may join the ranks of the State Democratic Party. Such engagement can result in a better harmonization of the Party’s initiatives with the needs and aspirations of these communities. In turn, these communities can generate the kind of electorate increases that can be significantly beneficial to the State Democratic Party. The work will be enormous and that is why I will dedicate myself to working conscientiously, collaboratively, and intelligently.
I would be honored if you would support my candidacy for a seat in Central Committee. You can help me significantly by spreading the word about my campaign, and committing your attendance and your vote on Saturday, May 18. Should you wish to speak with me and learn more about me and my candidacy, I can be reached via email at elvis....@gmail.com.
I look forward to our conversations and to working together with you to ensure that the Virginia Democratic Party continues to facilitate and encourage the full participation of all Virginians in choosing their elected officials and controlling their political destiny.
Thank you for your time and for consideration.
