status of next, last interpretation

I've read a few, older posts asking about the interpretation of, for
example, "next thursday". Would someone let me know the project's
current position, and future plans regarding this?

For my application, I'd want "this thursday" and "next thursday" to
mean two different things, so I'd also appreciate knowing your
recommended approach to supporting this interpretation.
