Not my work but one of my favourites is this public transport line
diagram. It consumes bus route data from OpenStreetMap and provides
the line diagram output. This is from some time back, so it may have
evolved since then.

The variety of visualizations are wonderful. I'll show more of my
favourites at the Intro to OSM talk on Friday. [1]
The canonical example of why visualizations matter is
OpenCyclemap.org. It was the first specialty visualization of OSM
data, and displayed bicycling infrastructure for an audience of
cyclists. For example, highways were reduced in prominence and
bicycle parking was displayed along with bike shops and cycle routes.
After opencyclemap was created, many more users provided improved
cycle infrastructure data. That same effect happens with each new
visualization in the OSM space. If you can show the data, people will
use the data. :-)
One of the topics this weekend is "A Canadian Rendering style for
OpenStreetMap. One idea is to show winter roads. Another, perhaps
less-serious, is to display a certain brand of coffee shop
prominently. What features make a map more Canadian, or better for
Canadians?
Best regards,
Richard
