I'm currently working on a story (deadline Thursday) about gun crime in Toronto. Toronto Police service has some great summary data on their website (in PDF form) but they don't offer any in-depth Excel datasets, shapefiles, etc. Has anyone here ever approached TPS for more detailed/malleable datasets, or can suggest a good place to look, short of filing an FOI request?
We have tried many times for students and researchers but they will never release anything outright. Some PhD students have gained access but to very limited data and for limited publishing possibilities.
There is this group that does sell scraped crime data: http://spotcrime.com/

Unfortunately we aren't successful in receiving any datasets from TPS. As you know, TPS is an agency of the City so our policies don't apply to them. Perhaps an FOI or a nudge from you can make a difference.
Thanks, keep us posted.

The Wellbeing Toronto team receives data from TPS. You can find the 2008 datasets by neighbourhood there, and 2011 data will be released shortly. For additional info please contact s...@toronto.ca.
