I would argue against using the W3C because they represent their
member institutions rather than being open to all.
I also don't get this obsession with standards bodies - if a group of
people agree that it is a standard, then it is a standard.

That's how DP is running at the moment, except there are company
representatives in DP, not companies themselves.
Sounds like we have the ideal situation now then.

It should be noted that the W3C is a standards body, not a person or
company - i.e. it is composed
insitutitions like companies, and so it can in general only do things
its members ask for.
It does have a small paid staff, but after conversation with Ivan
Herman, it does appear they are all tied up with other standards work,

I spoke to TimB today and he's certainly aware of the DP group. He
seemed quite keen about it too.

I think the W3C should be involved, but like others have said... as
like any company or person. I don't think the effort would be slowed
down by the W3C but I understand what other people's views are and

Agreed - the need for milestones and concrete action is definitely
here, and the action groups should do an excellent job of moving
things forward. Might also be an effective means for separating the
people willing to get their hands dirty from those more keen on
dropping names when it suits their agenda.

Action group is definately where work will be done. As a
decentralised, non hierarchical movement, it's going to take us a
while to collaborate on a system of working, but I think we are
getting there.

This initiative is too big for just a workgroup; it is a movement that
is redefining the economics on the web, as DP is challenging companies
