The Language

In order to ensure consistent application of terms, phrases, and names associated with the DataPortability Project, please use the following guidelines when referring to elements of the DataPortability Project.

  • data portability is an idea. It should be used in the lowercase as it is not a proper noun. The words should not be joined and should not be capitalized in this form.
  • DataPortability is the implementation of that idea. The concatenation of the words, capitalized, is to make the concept distinguishable from other uses. The concept of data portability and the  DataPortability project (see below) must be distinguished from one another and they should never be used interchangeably.
  •  The DataPortability Project is the project that makes the movement towards data portability happen in the broadest sense.
  • DataPortability Action Groups are the working groups of the DataPortability Project that are responsible for making this move occur.
  • DataPortability initative is the term used to denote a initiative or project within an action group.
  • The DataPortability Workgroup, also known as DPWG, is currently in the process of being dismantled.  Its function has been replaced by the action groups. In media references, claims of "joining the workgroup" should be replaced by declarations for support of the DataPortability Project. Participation of corporate entities in the DataPortability Project can occur only through collaboration in action groups, via their own official declaration of support for the DataPortability Project, or future through compatibility with DataPortability.

The Logo

The DataPortability Logo is the center piece of the DataPortability Brand. Please select from and use the following logos on your blog sidebars, websites and projects to help promote the DataPortability Project. The badge should link to www.dataportability.org.

Important note: Please do not use these logos to claim compatibility with DataPortability. DataPortability Compatibility can only be established once the DP Reference Design is completed. We will provide a checklist (against the Reference Design) and a special logo for that purpose in the near future.
