Spam attack

There seems to be a spam attack, where new accounts are created that
join the mailing list.

I am going to restrict membership until further notice to be on a
approval basis (ie, you cannot join unless you are approved by a
manager of this mailing list).

Naturally, I don't want to be doing this, but for now this should
prevent the multiple spam messages getting through which I've just
deleted and banned.

It appears there is a new option so that instead of approving new
members, only your first post gets moderated which if approved, clears
you subsequently. I think this is a better approach. Unless people
have a problem with that, I'm applying that henceforth to ensure new
members joining are not spammers.
